Minamoto Kitchoan
Around the corner from a TGI Friday's in Midtown, you can find yourself in a place far far away. You might not expect that in the Rockefeller Center area, you could have something that's like a teleporting machine. With tourists all around you, it's always good to know where to go to escape the madness. The store in question is Minamoto Kitchoan and the place it takes you to is Japan. From the outside it looks like a store that sells cute Japanese knick nacks. Looks closer and you'll discover that it's actually a store that sells wagashi, the Japanese snack that's often served during tea ceremonies.

Popeyes Fried Chicken
Watching the NBA playoffs lately, it hits more more than ever that life is all about managing expectations. If you're the number one seed in the east and you get knocked out in the second round, then you're Lebron and the Cavs. And something has to be wrong. If you're the Boston Celtics, you might be the over-achieving veterans, although if the Celts get knocked out in the Eastern Conference Finals, it's because their old legs wore out. (In the mean time, fingers crossed for a Phoenix vs Boston final...) So when you're awesome, you're a seasoned veteran but if you suck, you have tired, worn out bodies. It's odd the way expectations shape reality. It's almost as if reality itself hardly exist in a vacuum. How does this work with food? Is there an algorithm of delicious? Where does Popeyes fried chicken place on the pantheon of great chickens in the culinary history of the world. Did the Romans have anything as wild as spicy fried chicken at three pieces for $3.49? They might not have had it in ancient times. They do have it now in Midtown Manhattan though.

Khao soi at Pams Real Thai
I don't like volcanoes. In fact, you could probably say that I hate volcanoes. Sure, sure, the lava it spews out makes for cool looking islands in Hawaii but hey... when it spews out ash clouds and cancels flights... well, it throws the tail end of a vacation all outta wack. So instead of more France talk, I'll talk about Thai food! Prior to my trip to France I had a good lunch at Pam's Real Thai with James of The Eaten Path.

Fish and female bathrooms
Fried fish sandwiches is one of those things like fried chicken or chocolate cake, in that it has a lot of leeway before the thing just taste like ass. Think about it. The number of diehard fast food fried chicken folks out there far outnumber the number of diehard Wendy's or McDonald's fans. It's because when you deep fry something, most of the time it's going to be great for your taste buds and for your arteries. Don't worry, just keep eating. Science will bail you out in the future. I fully believe this 'cholesterol' thing is just a hoax. Please. Next you're going to tell me the world is round and Mayweather is too pussy to fight Pacquiao. (Note, yes the world is round and yes Mayweather is a chicken). So a few weeks ago I walked by Mike's Deli and noticed a fried fish sandwich on the menu. Of course I had to give it a shot.

Yakitori Totto
The only thing that I've eaten that was truly truly a party in my mouth was pop rocks. Those candies that give you little bursts of pop when you chugged those little cystals directly from the packet. Parties are loud and boisterous and lively. The older I get, the less of an appeal that as. And Sifton and Kanye might think much of mood rings, I simple have mood swings at parties. Such is the peril of social inadequacy. What I do crave however, is a vacation in my mouth, and not just any type of vacation. Not your Cancun bullshit where you're surrounded by the likes of Snooki and Situation, but one more suited for AARP members. Relaxing, warming, and satisfying. A couple of weeks ago I slowly trotted my geriatic ass over to the west side of Midtown, and found lunch sactuary at Yakitori Totto.

Jerk Pan truck and big skinned chickens
Do you ever work inside of a coffee shop or a cafe sometime? And then someone approaches you with a lost puppy look and asks, "Are you connected to the internet right now?" Man. I hate it. Usually here I violate a personal rule, and pretend that none of the perfectly sounding English words make any sense. Then there's usually after my feigned lack of understanding, a follow up question comes, "You know, the internet. The Wifi." Yes person, I know what you mean. Pero, yo no hablo ingles. The thing is, you look like a deer in headlights and I'm... too busy procrastinating to help you figure out why you can't connect to the wifi. The truth is that I also get a deer in headlights look, because I'm wondering, "wait, this person's been reading over my shoulder and saw that I opened seven tabs worth of food blogs?!" This is New York, and if you come to me lost and you don't know where the F train goes, I'll tell you. You wanna know why your network card can't connect to the router? Naw, go home and use your internet there. Can't we just return to the simple times? Where I can just do whatever and eat my street cart food in front of a financial behemoth that was once bailed out by TARP? Why, that time was this week! There's a building for JP Morgan Chase on Park between 47th and 48th, and it's sandwiched by the Steak Truck and the Jerk Pan truck. After I finished eating the chicken and lamb rice combo, I noticed the Jerk Pan truck and knew that a double lunch was in order. Good thing for me that Jerk Pan serves a small 'lunch special' serving for just $6.50 as opposed to their normal servings, which are all around $10.

The Steak Truck
Earlier today I saw this disturbing news on Midtown Lunch... apparently they're going to ban seafood from a food cart! Today it's seafood and tomorrow it's going to be bacon and an occasional steak. And then what would fake vegetarians have to eat?! But I digress, food carts are an important thing to me, and of course the city is doing a poor job managing such a thing, considering they make stupid rules and never try to profit from said stupid rules. What kind of bureaucracy is this?! At least swindle some dudes. Since last night I finally caught up on my episodes of Glee, and this video is a pretty good assessment of how I feel about food carts. For those of you who don't follow teen pop (and I don't know why you would do such a thing), the song is called My life would suck without you by Kelly Clarkson. So let's talk about some street food now shall we? Yesterday I tried the Steak Truck

Best cookie it is not
Chocolate chip cookies are a funny thing apparently. For example, if you like Chips Ahoy cookies, did you know they taste 10x better if you microwave it for just about.. 10 seconds or so? Maybe less? They get all soft and gooey and the thing is just heaven. Serious Eats thinks that Pret has a good cookie. Better than City Bakery. They also think Bouchon has a good cookie. So I tried them, although I only took pictures of the Pret cookie.

Momofuku in Midtown
Apparently today is the GREATEST DAY IN MIDTOWN LUNCHING HISTORY. Don't take my word for it, ask my friend Zach of Midtown Lunch. Today's the day that David Chang's Momofuku empire expanded to Midtown Manhattan. After conquering the East Village, you knew they would have their sights set on even more hoods throughout the city. When there are lines to your restaurants every night, it makes sense to give the people what they clamor for. What exactly are we clamoring for? For starters, some high end banh mi in Midtown. And so we have Ma Peche, the newest colony in the Momo empire.

Lamb burger at The Breslin
Tits and ass is the killer combo that many males love. Another combo that guys (and gals) love is burgers and fries. And yes I just started this post this way just to put T&A into the beginning of this post. Few weeks ago, Grub Street did a french fries post with Alain Ducasse and he listed The Breslin as having the top fries. I went to check out the burger this week because sometimes the only way to feel alive is make sure you're full and content after being satiated by the wonderful combo of tits and ass burgers and fries.

El Rey del Sabor by Bryant Park
"A Coke is a Coke and no amount of money can get you a better Coke than the one the bum on the corner is drinking. All the Cokes are the same and all the Cokes are good. Liz Taylor knows it, the President knows it, the bum knows it, and you know it." The Internets tell me this quote is from Andy Warhol. Of course you can't get foodies to agree on that, because coke in Mexico is supposed to be vastly superior to coke in the U.S., and Obama could probably import some Mexican coke to the White House kitchen pretty easily. The beauty of something like Coke though, is not lost on me. It's not about the type of sweetner, its about the overall taste and experience of enjoying a tall glass of coke. Anyone has access to such a thing because it's so widespread and the mass manufacturing and distribution of this product has brought this drink to people all over the world. And for the most part, everyone is getting the same product. You think that's no big feat, until you want to carry such a characteristic to other foods that you enjoy. Even though I've enjoyed Taco Bell in the past and suffered through the consequences, I'm smart enough to realize that shit ain't the best tacos. There's no one chain to turn to in order to get good tacos, and even if some people fans of places like Baja Fresh or Chipotle, those two chains haven't penetrated nearly as many hoods as the house that spawned the chihuahua that could speak Spanish. Where does that leave me when I want tacos?

Kwik Meal and eating less
With all the new food carts that arrive on the streets of New York City every month, it's only natural that some of the older carts would feel left behind. I walked by the Kwik Meal cart a couple of weeks ago during my lunch break, and there was just one person in line. It was the perfect opportunity to try this cart. I used to work right next to this cart for two years and never ever tried it because of the price and because there used to always be a long line. Maybe random people walking by would think something was wrong with a cart that has few customers during the lunch rush, but any avid reader of Midtown Lunch would know that's not the case with Kwik Meal cart. When Midtown Lunch conducted Street Meat Palooza 2 this past summer, Kwik Meal proved to be as formidable as ever.

New York Times Cafeteria
One star. Two star. Three star. Four star. How many stars would a New York Times food critic give tothe New York Times cafeteria? That's a question I really would love to find out. A few weeks ago my friend John, who works at the giant that is "all the news that's fit to print," signed me into the new-ish New York Times building on 8th Avenue, and we had a go at the cafeteria.

Soon du bu lunch special at Shilla
Sometimes you don't know you have a good thing until it's gone. A few months ago, Shilla ran some ridiculous $4.99 lunch specials and I never bothered to go. Who knew it was only for a month?! I didn't! The update on Midtown Lunch kind of crushed my spirits. But Shilla restaurant ran another lunch special. This time it was $5.99 which is not as good but still insanely good. Here I'm going to reveal a little bit of my neurosis. It's actually a bit crushing and debilitating to tell you the truth, but sometimes I push through it. After seeing the $5.99 price, I walked past Shilla's to look for something else, something that looked as interesting. After seeing no better option, I walked back in the direction of Shilla's. Paused at the window. Stared at the price. Then I walked on again... all because of.. ONE DOLLAR! (What is wrong with me?!)

Bastille Day parties in NYC
Yay! It's Bastille Day! I don't know what that means. Actually did you know that in France, they don't even call it that? It's true. Steph told me that it's just an American thing. But here in New York, the France national day celebration is still called Bastille Day Celebration. In fact, there's not one, but two such parties in New York every year. Many people are familiar with the one in Carroll Garden's on Smith St. There's pétanque in the streets and everything. The second party is in Manhattan around 60th street by Lexington Ave. This one is backed by the fiaf. If you're into food, I say go to the 60th street celebration next year, and if you're into chilling and drinking beer, then go to the one on Smith st.

Bento Nouveau
Sometimes you eat food so good, it makes you wanna have its babies. Other times, you eat food and it makes you want to have daddy issues like Katie Lee Joel and Padma Lakshmi. Or it just makes you want to be the hostess for Top Chef. One of those, I just get it confused sometimes. I went to Sushi! by Bento Nouveau last week and it fell into the category of... shit, I don't know. It certainly didn't make me want to have its babies though. I'm still going to tell you about the beef sukiyaki over rice for $7 bucks, and other stuff, just because I can.

New York Bakery and epic running fail
When I first saw the sign that said "New York Bakery", I was really intrigued. A bakery! It's named after the city! How could I have been in the dark about this? I had to investigate. Upon investigation, the first thing I learned was that New York Bakery wasn't a bakery at all. They have some baked goods, depending on whether you visit the store before they sell out. But it's just mass produced baked goods wrapped in plastic. You can find the same kind of baked goods at many of the Japanese or Korean grocery stores like Sunrise Mart. What does New York Bakery have if they don't have baked goods? Spanish/Latin/Korean food.

Woorijip noodle bar and Clark Kent
Watching the NBA playoffs this year has taught me one thing - a team can be extremely competitive in one game, and completely off in the next game. In game 2 of the Celtics vs. Bulls series, the Chicago Bulls lost by just three points. But in game 3, they were down by 34 points in the fourth quarter! Consistency is a quality that's rare in every walk of life. Food sometimes behave that way too. Some days you're Superman, and some days you're Clark Kent. And then some days you're Lois Lane. I heard about this noodle bar in the back of a Korean deli in k-town. Woorijip is the spot and Blondie and Brownie first reported about it. It's taken me four months to actually go try this thing...

Little Pie Company
After seeing Jonathan talk about Hoosier Mama, I just had to counter with a specialty pie shop in New York. A good pie week can't end without a trip to the Little Pie Company. You can't help but love the name of their store. You don't see any cupcake place call themselves something like, "Cupcake Place" or something like that. My friend Eric is a pie lover, and told me that I should try their signature pie is the sour cream apple walnut. That's by far the most interesting sounding pie I've heard of, that still has the potential of being good. But first, I had to try something more traditional, a slice of their cherry pie.

Duane Reade Sandwich
I ate a sandwich from a drugstore. No, no, it's not the one that Zach declined. This was a different sandwich from a different drug store. If you don't live in New York City, then you're not familiar with Duane Reade drugstores. They're basically the local version of Walgreen/CVS. Drugstores have sort of turned into convenience stores these days, selling everything from condoms to beer to sunglasses. Yup. Convenience. Someone should tell the owners of Duane Reade to open up in Cancun (Mexico) and Destin, FL. They started renovating their stores late last year and I noticed today that they actually have pre-wrapped sandwiches. Of course I had to eat this.

Lily O'Brien hot chocolate and Zaiya cinnabon
Sometimes people see me take a picture of their food or their store, and they ask me, "Yo, what you be doing?" Usually I just tell them it's for personal use (and it is) and that I just like to take pictures of my food (also true) and that seems to please them. When I took a picture of the Lily O'Brien Chocolate store that just opened up by Bryant Park, an employee asked me if I was a journalist taking pictures for a publication. Since this doesn't count as a publication because you know, I'm just a blogger, I figured it's all good. He said something about how they gave NYTimes the permission to do photos and they can't let other publications do it first or whatever. Blah blah. See, when you're a blog, you don't have rules. I got myself a Lily O'Brien signature hot chocolate and went off to buy me a cinnabon from Zaiya because Zach said there wuz buns.

Grand Sichuan lunch special and I am myopic
Usually when I'm jonesing for Sichuan food, I hit up Szechuan Gourmet for dinner or it's their take-out lunch specials like their pork belly with chili leeks. If you're feeling sluggish at work, this would definitely light a fire under your ass. Almost literally too... Last week I ventured to the east side of Midtown in search of something new. I already knew from Midtown Lunch that I wasn't supposed to order any bubble tea at Grand Sichuan but I figured that $6.75 for a lunch special was reasonable if it came with a can of coke (and you could substitute soup or an egg roll). I picked the most Chinese sounding thing on the lunch special menu: gui zhou spicy chicken.

Duck pastrami and fooding bipartisanship
Our new President, aka Mister Awesome, said something during his prime time press briefing the other day. "I'm happy to get good ideas from across the political spectrum, from Democrats and Republicans." Now that's a novel idea. On the food front, I mostly love food that's cheap. If we're specifically on the subject of lunch foods, the cheaper, the better. Cheapness resonates with me. At the heart of the matter is the idea of value. Value for someone with a 9-5 is not going to be the same as value to someone who works at a non-profit and certainly different from Donald Trump. It's not that I cannot see the quality of high priced items, it's just that I prefer cheap shit. It is said that folks in Japan associate price with quality and cheap stuff doesn't sell well there. I actually question high priced items and wonder if the intrinsic value is being elevated by a name-brand, or if the product is intrinsically better. Last week I heard about an $11 dollar sandwich on Midtown Lunch and it looked so good I was willing to forgo my cheapness and see what the brouhaha was all about.

Nougatine for Winter Restaurant Week 2009
Restaurant Week is upon us again! Some people are not in favor of RW menus because they believe it's not such a great deal. There are certain places around the city where the meal seems like a good bang for your buck. Nougatine routinely comes up as one of the places to visit. They actually offer the RW lunch deal year round, Monday through Friday. I actually visited Nougatine for summer Restaurant Week but it was uninspiring. This time around it was a much better experience. The best part about the meal was that it occurred on a Sunday. Due to the economy being in the shitter, it seems that many restaurants are participating in Restaurant week even on the weekends. It used to be that Restaurant week was only Monday through Thursday, but now there's Friday and even Sunday! Anyway, stuffing my face is always a good recipe for forgetting about the economy.

Kabab grill and goaty stew
I was actually on my way to go check out Macaron Cafe but I was swayed by the huge 'Internet Access' banner. Why eat food when you can feed your body with broadband? The Kabab Grill attracted my attention because what's better than kababs when it's twenty degrees outside? As it turned out, it wasn't really a kabab grill, but actually a place that has Pak-Indian food and Latin food.

A taste of the black label beef
I've always had this problem with the notion of deliciousness. Take for example, Dr. Pepper. There's nothing like the first sip out of the can of a Dr. Pepper. It's really amazing and delicious. Not everyone love it though. Yesterday I tasted an aged beef cheeseburger. It was delicious, but does everyone love the taste of aged meat? Aged beef is part of the new La Frieda Black Label blend that's being used at City Burger. When City Burger first opened in Midtown, I didn't like them at all but now they may deserve more consideration and praise.

I invite David Kamp for some McDonalds
David Kamp might as well work for the National Inquirer. Really. You know that tabloid mag that calls themselves journalists? Yup. Kamp is just like the National Inquirer. Here's the latest blurb covered by Fork in The Road:
"Afterwards, a discussion ensued inspired by questions from the audience. A general disapproval of blogs was espoused, and one panel member predicted that blogs would soon be edited. Maybe just trying to be controversial, Kamp reviled chowhound.com and egullet.com, calling them "insular," but then praised Josh Ozersky and his new blog."
I mean, if David Kamp doesn't know the difference between a posting forum and a blog, then I'm not going to distinguish him as a writer from those who write for the National Inquirer. In fact, why distinguish him from motherfucking douchebags who eat shit? Why should I? He doesn't take the time to acknowledge or understand where the 21st century is going, and I'm not going to acknowledge that there are different kind of writers. In fact the other day I read something written by a 5th grader. Musta been David Kamp's colleague. But since I'm reasonable. Anytime you want Mister Kamp, I'll treat you to a delicious McDonald's meal, face to face, so you can tell me how insular I am. mmmk? Thanks. El Rey del Sabor and food shizzle
You ever get that feeling that you just need to dial your life up a notch? Just a little? Because it's almost Christmas? Anytime you want to dial it up, you probably want some Latin food. I just made that up, but you're ok to dispute with me. Zach posted about El Rey Del Sabor food cart earlier this week and I rushed out to eat some. Why rush? Well, when the U.S. economy falls into a recession, I'll be eating to cheer myself up. So it's imperative to eat before the recession really hits. You gotta eat while the world is still a happy place. What could make you happier than a crunchy empanada or a huarache?

I ate Baba Booey
I just ate Baba Booey. Might have to go run off to see my doctor and get checked for venereal diseases or something. Obviously I didn't actually eat him because I'm trying to eat healthy now. Gotta save my calories for Thanksgiving. What I did eat was the Baba Booey cupcake from Crumbs. Pam's Real Thai
Sometimes I fail at being a food blogger. There were some free samples at Kyotofu last week. I failed to score any free samples because I fell ill to the quiet Asian stereotype. In the store, this nice woman was like, "Can I help you?" and I was thinking, "You could if it's free!" But it just felt so Asian to ask for free food and then leave. So instead I settled with being the meek Asian and left. Life is just not fair sometimes. To cheer myself up, thai food was in order. Around the corner from Kyotofu is Pam's Real Thai.

BA Supper Club and my Southern roots
Apparently Bon Appetit magazine does this "Supper Club and Cafe" thing for two weeks in late October. They get famous chefs to put their name behind some menu items, price them moderately towards the higher end of the lunch pricing spectrum, and just let it fly. Midtown Lunch reported of its opening and I had to go check it out today because the daily special today was shrimp and grits. Since I used to live in the South, it seemed like a good excuse to go take lunch and eat grits. (But honestly it wouldn't take much to convince me to go eat grits. It's quite good).

Chocolate bread pudding from The Dessert Truck
Holiday season is upon us. Halloween is just a few weeks away, but if you are anxious, there's something before super-duper candy day. Tomorrow is Sweetest Day. Apparently this is big in the Mid-West and Jonathan, who lives in Chicago, told me about this. I'm not sure how I'll celebrate it tomorrow, but I have a good idea... Bella Napoli and my quest for chicken parm
Lunching out has become a regular activity now. It's odd that now the economy is in a hole, I eat out for lunch more. This is mostly the result of not sleeping enough and that is the result of too much xbox 360. No time to sleep = no time to pack lunch. Scientists have shown it's possible to spend an unreasonable amount of time discussing how to create a NBA 2k9 dynasty. Seriously, last night we got the Knicks to trim like 70 million in payroll in the game, in one year. How awesome would that be if it could be possible in real life?! Anyway, so I've been taking a liking to eating my sandwiches with gravy. Wait, that's not gravy, those are tears shed over my dwindling retirement savings. Epic, epic fail. Obviously if I'm going to stuff myself, might as well do it right. And when I walked by the Bella Napoli last week, it was a good time to stuff my face.

Szechuan Gourmet gets me wet
I'm a chauvinistic, misogynistic pig. And I like steak, it's in my DNA as a man (I think...). After reading Frunk Bruni's article on gender differences, all I can say is, man, I'm glad wine ain't a big thing for me. The other thing is, whenenver dining with females, I live up to the stereotypical meek, quiet, geeky Asian boy. So succumbing the wine list is hardly ever an issue. But back to the issue at hand, which is food for men... if restaurants are separated into men and women leaning restaurants, than Szechuan Gourmet has to be a restaurant for the boys. It's one of my favorite places, and usually I hit it up with Eric the Teacher. This most recent trip was no different, and maybe we can figure out if it's a restaurant for men, women, or both.

Biryani cart and ticker watching
My friends... let me tell you how an AARP member and social security recipient would eat lunch in midtown Manhattan. Wait no, I'm not sure you're all my friends and the chicken tikka masala is certainly too hot for the geriatric candidate currently in the U.S. Presidential race. Can't be too sure though, maybe if CindyMac can turn it into her very own recipe, then it would all be okay. If you are like me, and have been caught up in the crazy economic news, then you know it's time to scale back. Packing lunch would be the best option but the next best thing is to eat from a street cart. A biryani street cart.

Lazzara and commodity prices
The economy is just crazy these days. You have prices going up all over the world. Lately it appears that all those fancy pants people who thought they were all hot shots and went to a business school? Apparently they can't run a business by themselves without letting greed over take them, and then ask for a bailout. All this news is distressing. The failing economy and soaring food prices is out of control. For my fellow eaters in midtown Manhattan, we now even have a price hike list for Midtown Lunch. It's time to add another casualty to the list of price hikes because apparently a chicken parm sandwich can cost $10 dollars now.

My mom used to tell me never to eat too much of one thing. She cautioned against my quarter of a whole cheesecake for breakfast and bagful of Cheetos for snacks. Mothers, what do they know?! When you go to Piece of Chicken, it's difficult to restrain yourself. Portion control flies out the window when food is this cheap and delicious. Really, I only spent $7 dollars on chicken and somehow I ended up with lunch for two days instead of one. Zach actually went to six fried chicken places in one day. Really, how do you do it man?

Chiyoda and cold udon
When it is a nice summer day in late August, I enjoy nothing more than some refreshing bukkake in the park. Oh no he didn't! Oh yes I did! And you should stop being so perverted! Goodness gracious. I have some common decency! If you are not well versed in Japanese cuisine, here is a quick lesson that I learned last week. There is the widely known definition and usage of the b-word. We won't go there. (Edit: Do not look this up at work.) In addition, the b-word is also used to describe dishes served with various toppings liberally sprinkled on top. Perhaps you were disgusted by the opening sentence, and your inner voice screamed, "WTF DANNY!? I WILL STOP READING FOODINMOUTH!" Then you focused purely on the dirty definition and I can't help you there. Stop thinking like that!

Dessert trucks of revolution
"I said, how bout a revolution? And he said right." A food truck revolution is exactly what we need in New York City. If we could have trucks in convenient areas similar to how it is in downtown Portland, then I would be a happy man. Dessert Truck is helping to start that revolution. The Dessert Truck goodies can make anyone feel good about a possible revolution of delicious food served from a truck. If you are not feeling excited, let me do that for you (and by that I mean yes, let me feel you... uh...)

Peanut butter chocolate time
Don't you just hate it when your sister tells you to stop doing something? Like when you're 9-years-old, stuffing your face full of cocoa puffs, and belting out the theme song to The Bodyguard. Yea I just dated myself as an old dinosaur but man Whitney Houston had a voice before all that crack. But I've always signed like someone on crack. "OMG, shut the hell up, you are so off key!" And like that, she crushed dreams of singing like a beautiful black woman. Luckily, my sister also influenced me in other ways, like teaching me about taking breaks from cocoa puffs to eat peanut butter and Reeses pb cups. And that's what drove me to the Treats Truck, a love of peanut butter goodness.

Chaat in midtown
A plate of vegetarian food for five dollars? Do you know everything else that I could get for five dollars?! Psssh, Taj Delhi Chat will not win me over! Those were my original reaction to the idea of having chaat for some Midtown Lunch. The pictures of the healthy and delicious looking food on Zach's blog helped to sway me. I am quite thankful because chaat is probably now my favorite summertime lunch. It is refreshing, healthy, and filling. What else could you ask for when it is so hot outside?

Red Lobster is phooey
Lines. You draw them to demarcate borders. For many foodies (yes, I know many food lovers hate that term, but I can write a diatribe about why if you love food, you are wrong to hate the term. And in fact later I will get into this), there is a line to be drawn against big corporate chains. Fortunately for you, my world is full of gradients and I think lines can be boring and stupid. So I will cross the line that many in the food blogosphere would not, and venture to infinity and beyond! Well, actually it was not infinity, it was just Red Lobster. And it was not beyond, it was just take-out lunch, but who is counting?!

Summer restaurant week at Bar Room of The Modern
Restaurant week used to excite me when I was an undergrad at NYU because the RW lunch specials of $24.00 was super affordable. Most of my meals back then consisted of ramen or cheap chinese take out food from Chinatown. RW was always a refreshing break from the normal stuff. Then as I got older and read more about the food scene in New York, the general consensus was that restaurants held back for RW. The cooks hated it because of the mad rush, and the menus were second rate compared to the normal menu. But after college I realized that food is only half of the experience, and the other half is about your dining companions. And that is why you should always bring an escort with you, and a Labrador retriever. This way, you can have the hot and the cuddly all at once. Note - you obviously do not want to cuddle with a escort for obviously reasons, and you bring the dog in case people become disgusted that you brought an escort. See, best of both worlds. Oh and I went to The Bar Room at The Modern earlier this week!

Shanghai Mong
There are many instances when you would want a "two for one" deal. When you buy cookies, cupcakes, and rain boots because what are you going to do with just one boot? Maybe you could use it as a flower pot. Very rarely do yo encounter a lunch special that lets you sample two dishes at once (think: General Tso and Beef and Broccoli, how awesome would that be?!) Lucky for me, Shanghai Mong offers their best noodle dishes into one item on the menu: Za Jiang Mein and seafood noodle soup.

Grays Papaya
For fourth of July, the thing to do is to have a barbeque in your backyard. Maybe that is why I am so into hot dogs these days. And I am going home for July 4th weekend, where my mom will probably tell me, "You look like you have been eating hot dogs all the time. What is up with that? Aiyowaya!" (All of that would be in Chinese, except the last part, which is not a word.) And after papaya dog and a haiku on hot dogs, it is time to talk about the winner. The winner is gray's Papaya because after you down the hot dog, you feel like the sexiest thing in the world (but just do not look at yourself in the mirror with your shirt off but if you do try my trick: get a mirror that is not very tall so when you stand in front of it you do not get to see your belly...) Winner winner, chicken dinner. I mean, weiner dinner.

Papaya Dog
Taking a break from the PDX posts, let us talk about hot dogs for a brief moment. In New York you can find hot dog vendors on street corners. The heart-warming and appetite inducing term for these is the "dirty water dog" because the hot dogs are generally kept in a warm water bath. You just do not want to spend too much time thinking about what is in that water... Of course this being New York, there is variety, and there are actual hot dog joints that just dole out hot dogs. With Grey's Papaya, Papaya Dog, and Papaya King, it makes you wonder WTF they are selling, hot dogs or tropical fruit. I passed by a Papaya Dog the other day and decided to give it a taste.

Woorijip kimbap
A few weeks ago I wrote about trying kimbap at E-Mo Kimbap, and I wanted to revisit the Woorjip kimbap and see how the two stacked up against each other. Before going on, I have to say that I am not sure why kimbap taste good, maybe it is because they pack a variety of ingredients into one single roll? Or maybe it is the presence of rice (and who does not love rice??) It is filling, but not satifying in a way that an eel roll would be or slabs of crispy bacon. Oh stop looking at me like that, you do it too, slabs of bacon is happiness. All that said, kimbap is great for lunch because it fills you up right.

Caribbean Spice off to a shaky start
Sometimes my mind tricks my taste buds. It is kind of like when I trick my friends with the weather report. You see, every time my friend Jeremy asks me about the weather, my response is always like, "It is sunny, but breezy," or "It kind of cold, but I guess you can do without a jacket." I do this so much that there is a joke about "Danny's Weather Report." Basically you never listen to it because it is tricky. See, sometimes when I see a food cart, my mind tells me, "Food cart! You love it! They might suck but they might be good." This time around? It was bad.

kim bap that feels homemade
Sometimes I feel such a let down when transitioning from one blog post to the next. Alas, I did not drop this lunch item on the ground, it all went hygienically into my stomach. Nothing to see here! The first time I encountered this myserious thing called kim bap was a few months ago when I had to kill time around k-town. Actually I was waiting for my friends to belt out Sweet Caroline and hunger got the best of me (as it always does.) And I knew Zach of Midtown Lunch was a fan of Woorjip, but somehow I ended up two doors down from Woorjip, at this place called E-Mo Kim Bap.

Big Bowl Noodles
You know, I think if you just plop a Chinese restaurant in Midtown Manhattan, people will be there eating during lunch. Quality of the food does not seem to matter. The thing is, I do not think you need to be a Chinese food fiend (like myself) to be able to understand if it is good or not. You will know if you like it. Big Bowl Noodles is a decent place for lunch, but it does not come close to unseating Szechuan Gourmet as my favorite spot. As a quick and filling substitute, Big Bowl Noodles is a decent choice.

The guy behind the counter asked me, "Do you want skin?" Am I alive? Do I like oxygen? Do I like comic cons? Or cherry blossoms? Uh, duh! City Burger
After reading about City Burger a few weeks ago, I got kind of excited at the prospect of a new potential lunch spot. This past weekend, I found myself around midtown and just wanted something quick and tasty for dinner. The review from A Hamburger Today made it seem like it would be good once they work out some kinks associated with being a new restaurant. And everyone who skims through the entries here at Food in Mouth know that I like just about everything. Well, apparently not everything because the hamburger at City Burger was beyond disappointing.

Kim and his aunt need to tweak it
Working in midtown, your lunch options seem limited unless you read up and do your homework. Zach of midtown lunch mentioned Kim's Aunt Kitchen Cart late last summer. All I know is that aunts are cool, even if I do not personally know Kim's aunt. I was a big fan of the cart last summer before this blog started, but last week I went back to check out if the quality held up.

Chef yu is solid
The other day my roommate told me about a Chinese restaurant near her office. I was skeptical because she works around 34th street area - the tundra of the midtown tundra that is the New York food landscape.

Yagura rocks your shrimp socks off
If you follow midtown lunch then you know 41st street in midtown is like Japanese food heaven because there are three Japanese joints all lined up in a row. I really like the mom-pop feeling of Yagura, and also because it is the only one cool enough to have a mini-grocery store in the same space. I think you cannot go wrong anytime you walk into a restaurant and there is also a grocery store. How great would it be to have Piggly Wiggly attached to a McDonald's. You are not familiar with Piggly Wiggly? Try Win a Date with Tad Hamilton. Yes, for some reason I have seen that.

Pump it up
One of my former supervisor was this extremely jacked dude. He was a very smart guy and always watched his diet, and he was one of those guys that probably started working out when he was eight. One day I asked him where to go for lunch and he mentioned The Pump Energy Food. I waited forever to try it out because dude, it costs ten dollars for a big plate of healthy goodness. They use no butter at da Pump and no fried foods either. How good could it possibly be?

Daisy May is amazing but service needs help
Daisy May's BBQ. I am not sure how to proceed with this post because as you can see from the pictures, half a pig is a big deal. No joke, three times last week I just sat in my seat and said silently, "There will be pig!" And then last Saturday came, and when they brought out Rosa, my entire body shook with excitement. Half of a pig. Just think about that for a second. They went out, found a little piglet and then roasted it, then HACKED IT IN HALF! How fierce. I have had good bbq before, but this was on another level. However, while the meal was splendid, things took a turn for the awkward at the very end when Daisy May decided to be mathematically retarded.

Petrossian and buttery goodness
More croissants! This time from Petrossian! Sometimes I get a little OCD with food choices and totally go overboard in trying them out. Speaking of OCD, that has become a really cool word. Kids my age like to say they have OCD and thus can or cannot do certain things. "I am a dork" is totally another phrase that is now cool. What is up with that? All these trends are not useful to me right now, but ten years ago? Hell yea! You see, inside of me is this little ball of energy called the STFU ball, and when it grows too big, I explode. If one more person tells me he/she is a dork because he/she likes scrabble or knitting, I WILL EXPLODE! I CANN HAZ COMBUSTION! or something. Now let me tell you how I was dorking it out while eating croissant + cookie.

Bouchon has a yum cookie
At the end of my vegetarian week, the only thing that kept me from going absolutely cuckoo was dessert. What ended up happening around Saturday and Sunday was that I had this, "almost at the finish line!" thought in my head and it just completely wrecked havoc on my sense of desire. Instead of broccoli, my mind wandered towards BACON. And since I could not have bacon, the next best thing was a chocolate cookie. To minimize the guilt associated with a cookie breakfast, I thought croissants would be a good idea. And Bouchon Bakery came to my rescue.

Kunjip and love is like doing crack
Happy Valentines Day! I am quite ambivalent about this holiday, for all the obvious reasons... But in the spirit of the cupids day, I present you with a youtube video (of course), and this one is by Helen Fisher of Rutgers University. She studies romantic love and apparently love is like cocaine (and the video is long, but if you only have four minutes, skip to the 20:00 mark and watch the last four minutes). Fisher says one main characterisitic of romantic love is "intense craving", and when it gets cold I have intense cravings for stews, like soon du bu. Today I present the one from Kunjip from K-town.

Dawat and really random things
Yes this post has pictures of Indian food but hold on a second. Any of you out there drink Ovaltine or Milo or Horlicks? Up until a few days ago I had never tried any one of these things, which are all listed under 'malted milk' at Wikipedia. I bring this up because I can barely taste a difference between Milo and Ovaltine. And in general, those three drinks do not move me in any shape way or form. Basically to me, malted milk is like Ron Paul, slightly interesting, but not robust enough to make me change my drink. Oh right, and a few weeks ago I had some Indian food at Dawat.

Porter House New York hamburger
After the masa debacle I walked over to Porter House New York and looked for something to eat. I really was not in the mood to eat a whole steak, and the guy next to me at the bar had a really good looking hamburger and I went with that. There is nothing like eating a burger and talking elections with a stranger at a bar. My friend Jon tells me that this blog is comprised mostly of posts about burgers and desserts, and he is right. Burgers and desserts probably rank really high on my list of really awesome foods to eat. I think this week I will try to cook a bit more at home and the post about it next week. You are thinking, "Did Danny drop coin to go get there?" Actually I went during lunch when they have lunch specials for $25-$35 dollars. Woo. What a steal! It would be really great to show you awesome pictures of the lunch I had at Bar Masa. Maybe I would inject some bad writing about how enjoyable the experience was or how wonderful the food tasted. Sun yip or ho yip or fun hos
Welcome to another installment of the most irrelevant food blog ever. I say that not because it is true, but because half of this blog has nothing to do with food at all. Sure, in the upcoming paragraphs there will be some details about Ho Yip or is it Sun Yip? I just love a good naming crisis, sometimes I have them too, but that is another story for another time. Menchanko Tei
I was supposed to be writing about ramen from Menchanko Tei, except the Knicks were in the middle of pursuing a three-game winning streak, and in the middle of a commercial break, I got sucked into watching Gossip Girl for fifteen minutes. Yea, fifteen whole minutes where the pretty protagonist was getting sloshed at a bar and then a Smarmy McCreepster tries to pull an unsmooth move as he lured her into the kitchen for a grilled cheese with truffle oil. (See, there was food involved). I want my fifteen minutes back. Oh if they could just invent something that lets you reclaim wasted time...

Let us play, things that I was supposed to do, versus things I actually did instead. Supposed to: read the library book that will be due in four days. Actually did: listened to songs on youtube that my friends sang in karaoke last weekend. Let me ask you, have you ever seen three guys sing the song, Put your record on by Corinne Bailey Rae? Neither have I, because I was singing it and there were no mirrors. Yea and that was after You're still the one by Shania Twain. Sight to see, lemme tell ya. Oh and Don't stop believin' by Journey is a great one for groups. You know, just FYI. And pointless trivia of the day is that in some parts of the world the word for karaoke is: ka-la-O-kay. I am for real. Oh right, fooooood blog. Well aside from karaoke, Asians also like cheap food. Some of you are thinking that is not true of all Asians. Well, I took a scientific survey of one, and that was the result. Sorry. Without further ado, to infinity and beyond! (And by infinity I mean 'lunch').

Sapporo ramen
As someone who has never really celebrated Christmas, I really should have been posting on this instead of be lazy. Haha. No way that was going to happen... For Christmas Eve and Day, all I did was eat, watch movies, and play video games. Did you know that Chinatown is PACKED on Christmas Day? I walked into Grand Sichuan and the guy told me the wait for four was, "very long time." Guess eating at home would have been easier. On Christmas Eve eve, I went to watch I Am Legend and Juno. And then we sat in Sapporo eating ramen and talking what each of us would do if we got a girl knocked up. And while this has nothing at all to do with a food, you can read about my thoughts later on in this post.

Cinnabon goodness at the Rockefeller Center
Tourists in New York always puzzle me. I know there is heavy resentment from some residents that tourists just clog up the sidewalk and they walk too slow. Since I am prone to stop in the middle of the sidewalk at times, to snap up a picture, I do not have much beef with that. That and tourists pump in an inordinate amount of cash into the local economy. I was walking along fifth avenue on Sunday and saw this line to go into a store. This was maybe three in the afternoon. "They must be selling Wii's or something," I thought to myself. Upon closer inspection, it was an Abercrombie & Fitch store. Really, why come to New York to go to the A&F store? It is always interesting to see what tourists are into. After fifth ave, I was down in the Rockefeller Center and there were people in Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, and Subarros. The Cinnabon store? No love. Zero. And since I am all about giving out love, I went and gave Cinnabon some and bought one.

Something filling
I am just attracted to grimy places to eat lunch. When midtownlunch posted about the latin Food inside of a Blimpie, and how the Blimpie looked dirty, I knew that I had to give it a shot. It is a pretty straight forward place really, you get rice, beans, and one entree item. At a shade under six dollars, the perfect lunch item. And for those of you who just come to look at the pretty pictures, right now I am looking to upbeat songs to load onto my mp3 player. Tell me what gets your blood flowing while driving or pounding the pavements of your hometown. There you go, skip the rest of the words, skim the pictures, and offer a song suggestion. Thank you in advance my three loyal readers.

kum gang san soon du bu
Winter is definitely upon New York now. There is snow flurries in the forecast every few days and tourist season is in full swing. Since it is so cold, I like eating stuff that warms the soul. Soon du bu does just the trick. Not sure where one goes to find the best soon du bu in Manhattan, but my feeling on it is that most of the time it tastes good. Are they supposed to be super spicy? What is the tofu to seafood ratio supposed to be? And do you eat it with rice or just the stew? Do you put the rice into the stew or take alternate bites of each? How does the United States remove itself from the grips of the OPEC cartel? And how many licks does it take to get to the center of the tootsy pop?

After a week of eating mashed potatoes every other day, and almost a week of eating at home, what better way to start off the Christmas shopping season than to eat tamales. Yea, you read that right. Roasted Bone Marrow at Landmarc
A couple of weeks ago, Mark Bittman did a story on Fergus Henderson's bone marrow dish. As luck would have it, I found myself in the Time Warner Center the other day, and the restaurant Landmarc had roasted bone marrow on their menu too. I have never had bone marrow before, at least not roasted ones from the bones of a cow. One of my cousins actually stopped eating beef a few years back because the mad cow thing. Wu Liang Ye
I had been to Wu Liang Ye a few times for dinner and even tried their variation on pork belly with chili leeks, except they call it bacon and that kind of made it more delicious. The reason that I avoided their lunch special menu was because most of the things on there sounded like variations of most Chinese take-out places: General Tso, chicken with huana sauce, beef and broccoli, and so on. The had one thing on the menu that had the word "szechuan" in it, and that was the "Baby Shrimp with Szecuan Chili Sauce."

Soon Du Bu
The other day I went to Korea Town and just randomly picked a restaurant. Man, that was a bad idea. Apparently not all Korean food taste the same. One of my rules for ethnic cuisine has always been, if the restaurant do not serve their own people, then how authentic could it be? I have walked into a Chinese restaurant before, sat down, looked around, poured tea, and decided that it was just too white because there was not a single Chinese or Asian patron in the entire restaurant. Seriously. No good. When I looked into New York Kom Tang Soot Bul House, there were Korean patrons and I thought, "Hey, pretty authentic."

Pinkberry is hollow too
Remember when I went to Oko for yogurt and found that in the huge cup, all they did was give you a bunch of air? Well as it turns out, Pinkberry does the exact same thing. Somehow I feel ripped off because the center holds so much of that yummy stuff called air. How lovely. Maybe I should just stop eating ice cream and frozen yogurt though. I got up late this morning and did not have time to pack lunch, as a result, I paid a visit to one of the better Szechuan restaurants in Midtown. Ruby Tuesday is pricy
Ruby Tuesday started a new slogan called, "simple fresh American dining." Apparently it has not caught on with the burbs people since their profit dropped 49% in the first quarter. Ouch. Perhaps they spent too much money to make their Times Square restaurant look nice. Their CEO has promised to lower the price and have lunch options below $10 dollars in the future. If my hamburger cost $8 dollars as opposed to the $11, it would be just as enjoyable as a Goodburger.

Yum Thai
Thai food is one of those things like cocoa puffs, where it's almost always good. At least for me, that is always the case. My friend Ming tells me that I should be more discerning with my reviews and you know, train my palate, but usually my free time is spent flaming Michael Pollen lovers on various websites. Anyway, I like Thai food generally, and the only place in the heart of Midtown Manhattan is Yum Thai, and actually they are pretty good for Midtown prices.
