There's a lot of things that we can get today that we couldn't get fifty years ago. Technology has gone a long way to improve our way of life. Seriously, what would you do if you couldn't groupon and foursquare your way through the week? Obvious catastrophe would ensue. And really, there's not a damn thing that I really want from fifty years ago to replace with what we have today. For example, women's attire. I mean, is any dude gonna be like "damn yo, I wish all women on the sidewalks in NYC dressed like it was 1955." Right? And that's not to mention going to the beach. The women's bikini of 2010 certainly is an improvement on what was out there fifty years ago, if you know what I'm sayin'! Food is perceived differently though. Sure, I can get some apples from half a world away. But people aren't amazed at that... they're shocked and sometimes outraged! Technology is also supposed to help in efficiency... and there, folks again don't want efficiency! We want artisan! But I like mass produced. When I'm hungry and faced with budget limitations, I don't want some steamed pastrami that's a NYC delicacy or a fancy hot dog from some flea market... I want... a Big Mac.... [Continue reading]
Growing up in a Chinese home, I rarely ate hamburgers. To us, burgers were greasy American food, the kind of stuff you eat if you want to get fat. If you want to stay healthy, you eat the Chinese stuff, not the American shit. That might sound a little weird to you, but that's how it kind of was - our food versus their food. Now that I'm older and control my own diet, hamburgers have worked themselves into my life. A couple of days ago I went with Ming and got a cheeseburger from Stand. It was good but nothing to write home about. The only reason I went to Stand was because the line at the sandwich shop across the street was too long for my liking.... [Continue reading]
For the last two days, I've been listening to this filet o fish commercial. It's fun and addictive. I just play it over and over again. The first time I saw the commercial, I expected that guy with the drill to shut the fish up or something. Filet o fish is one of those things that McDonald's makes that's kinda good. Their nuggets are delicious fo sho, but the filet o fish ranks up there. My dad used to like it, and I thought it looked gross with the tarter sauce. It tasted fine though. The truth is I haven't had one in a while... but a fish burger is a might good idea. Speaking of burgers, I had a real one this past weekend from Molly's Pub. You wouldn't be able to tell from the outside, but this place serves a serious burger.... [Continue reading]
When you read enough blogs about hamburgers, you come to find out about the mysterious thing of the outter crust on a hamburger patty. I think my very first hamburger was probably McDonalds or Wendy's and honestly I don't remember. Those things don't have crusts. The Shake Shack burger supposedly develops a nice crust on the outside of the patty but I've mostly encountered inconsistent crustiness (but that's not a diss on SS, still love their burgers). First bite of the burger at The General Greene was a lesson on a hamburger with a solid crust. Unfortunately it was also a lesson on too much crust.... [Continue reading]
I've always had this problem with the notion of deliciousness. Take for example, Dr. Pepper. There's nothing like the first sip out of the can of a Dr. Pepper. It's really amazing and delicious. Not everyone love it though. Yesterday I tasted an aged beef cheeseburger. It was delicious, but does everyone love the taste of aged meat? Aged beef is part of the new La Frieda Black Label blend that's being used at City Burger. When City Burger first opened in Midtown, I didn't like them at all but now they may deserve more consideration and praise.... [Continue reading]
