Spring haiku with poyk but no perservatlves
Haiku time! This week Justin made a haiku on the fridge and voila! It's quite a good haiku. Someone told me haikus are supposed to be about the weather and stuff like that. Poetic shit. Not hot dogs or pizza haikus. Who knew? Since the weather started to get better in New York this weekend, this haiku is really appropo. Spring is great because it means all the vegetables will be in season at some point soon, and there will be lots of outdoor dining going on once it's consistently warm outside. This past weekend in Park Slope, you could already see signs of that

Melty chocolate haiku and letter grades
First let me say, this haiku is two weeks early for Valentines Day. If I had been on-time, I could have posted something about football. Instead we get something about chocolate. Um.. yea. Anyway... Wow, lots of stuff going on in the food world this week. I never read much on the weekend, and just now I caught up on twenty tabs worth of reading in Firefox. I should probably figure out that whole RSS reader thing, huh? A few weeks ago in a post that no one read, I ranted forever about possible stale cakes in Asian bakeries and food grades from the Department of Health in the city of Los Angeles. Midtown Lunch has some coverage and comments about the issue. My viewpoint on this remains the same - this is a great idea. I almost cannot believe there's any credible, logical, and plausible argument against this. If anyone out there has any, I would love to hear it. The best part about arguments against it is that people think of extremes and how crazy this idea can become. And people forget that we have a living, breathing case study in the form of letter grades in the SECOND BIGGEST city in America. It seems to work fine.

Year of the ox haiku
I was asking Jonathan online about what I was supposed to do during Chinese New Year. He gave me some fairly straight forward advice - eat whole fish and ask for money (Hong Bao). The banana-fication of my soul has brainwashed me and I barely remember asking for those things as a child. For those not familiar with the tradition, basically little kids get spoiled with money during Chinese new year. I don't remember whatever happened to the money after New Years though... maybe they all went into my "trying to use cavities to make grillz all the way back in the 80's" fund. Yea I'm a candy fan.

Inauguration haiku
Man, what an inauguration right? I guess it's too late to tell you to turn away if you're not into blatant pro-Obama talk on this blog. What a speech! Ah... I love it. It was important to find a haiku that's on the theme of the inauguration. Of course no haiku could ever serve it justice, at least not a haiku limited to food words. This week I'm glad that the haiku comes after a Tuesday. Posts are easier to write when you're happy with life and full of hope for the country.

Fat child haiku and a food policy for Obama
The haiku this week sort of describes me, minus the wild part and the fried pickle part. I was indeed a fat child, but fried pickles were never really part of my diet. This year I'm going to try to eat more vegetables and fruits though, instead of just cupcakes, burgers, or bacon. But mmmm... pork products. They're just so delicious and full of nutrients. I mean, if you can't actually see high cholesterol and blood pressure, that means it's not there. Same principle for Santa, Easter Bunny, and unicorns. Ah... it all makes sense now.

I dream of sleep haiku
New year, and I still cannot post the haiku post on-time. At least, when I started, it was still Sunday. That has to count for something. Lately it seems like no matter how much sleep is had, it's not enough. Funny how that works. Maybe sleep behaves the same way as nutella. It's never enough. More please. The best part is that I'm writing this when I should be sleeping! Lovely ain't it. The other thing to mention during this post is the obscenely cheap eats at Wah Fung No. 1 Fast Food. It was mentioned on Midtown Lunch last year when Zach was down in Chinatown for jury duty. I've actually been going there for a while, even before they raised the prices to $2.50.

Dog whisperer haiku
This week's haiku was inspired by the Dog Whisperer. Not too sure why the word 'whisper' is even in the magnetic poetry set of words, and I'm not going to argue with it. It works. It's random. It's a haiku! Yesssss. This week was clean the hard drive and look for old photos week or something. The rest of the post contains a couple of pictures from this random bakery in the Detroit area. If you're in the mood for a real entry, I did a guest post about Carl's Cheesesteak for Steph. Have a read if you want, and yes it's in English.

Real hot chocolate and snow haiku
Sometimes when you're constructing a haiku on your fridge at midnight, you kind of uh... forget how to do it coherently. I resorted to the familiar, and wrote about yellow snow. It hasn't snowed in New York yet but folks... just eat the white stuff. No yellow snow and for goodness sake, definitely not any other color either. Ew. Last week on Serious Eats they had a section about 12 days of hot chocolate. This past weekend I got some hot chocolate from Batch, the Pichet Ong bakery in the West Village.

Pork stew haiku and pork floss
Last night I looked on the fridge and boom! A haiku was already made for me! I'm not sure who made the haiku but much thanks. This week I'm way behind! Posting a haiku on Wednesday... Gotta get on schedule with these things. Hopefully this weekend will be better. If you read the haiku you might be a little confused about what it means. Uh... can't help you there because I didn't write it and it sort of confused me too. That's ok, we'll just chalk it up to incoherent poetry because after all, half of that Shakespeare shit is just nuts anyway.

Hot chocolate haiku
Are you feeling all holiday-y now? All the special Chrisma-hanau-kwanza-kah feeling that's in the air, and also on Starbucks's annoying playlist is already starting to grate on my nerves. I just want to sit down somewhere warm, drink a hot chocolate without worrying about bad music. Yes, just some hot chocolate in peace and quiet and warmth. This week's haiku is about hot chocolate because it's on my mind. Speaking of sweet things, a couple of weeks ago I wrote about a $10 dollar dessert run for Midtown Lunch. You can go read it and tell me how much I suck.

Thanksgiving 2008 part 1
Thanksgiving is upon us again! I guess after the previous post, I'm going to simmer down for this one. It's easy to go on a diatribe against people who drink haterade against blogs. The rants will have to be suspended at least for a week due to the gracious and kind nature of the Thanksgiving holiday. This year I got to have a pre-Thanksgiving day meal because Justin and Janice were gracious enough to host it and cook the turkey for everyone. And then I get to go home for a Chinese Thanksgiving on Thursday. It really is the best of both worlds. I would have taken more pictures of the dinner but hey, why take pictures when there's that much good food on the table?

Crack pie haiku and boyz ii men
This past weekend was the opening of the Momofuku Milk Bar. Apparently there's this new thing called, "crack pie". So what's better than crack pie? A haiku about crack pie. I didn't get a chance to try the crack pie so I have no idea how crackalicious it is. The ingredients of the pie are: butter, heavy cream, brown sugar, sugar, and corn starch. Um... hellooooo nurse! Sign me up for some of that crack pie next time please.

Birch beer haiku and Blue Marble ice cream
My weekend disappeared and it felt so good. This past Friday Gears of War 2 came out and I have been camping at my friends apartment. This is probably what Meth addicts do when they get something new to shoot up. Fortunately the only downside to xbox 360 is sleep deprivation. This week's haiku is about birch beer, which I thought was the same thing as root beer. Wikipedia says no. Well, whatever wikipedia says is the truth. Recently I had some root beer at the Shake Shack on the UWS, and I saw Tina of The Wandering Eater try the root beer at Momofuku Ssam Bar. I just want to drink root beer and play horde all day long. This work thing is getting in the way.

Autumn vegetables haiku
On the eve of Obama's landmark victory in the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election, I feel ecstatic. There's a pop in my step and I wonder if the rest of the country is as jubilant. It's either that or the Halloween candy talking. Judging by the size of my belly, it's probably the latter. All that sugar just makes ya jumpy. You know what happiness leads to? It leads to gorging myself with food. Actually I should try to eat more vegetables, then the gorging would not be such a bad move. This weekend I also ate some tasty things like donuts and pizza and cheesy poofs. I'll try to blog about some of those things this week, but not the cheesy poofs because you probably know what they taste like.

Thirsty fish haiku and dunkin donuts
My friends have informed me that ever since I've started writing here on Food in Mouth, I've been making lame-ass attempts at using words higher than my current reading level. So this weekend when Ming brought up he was interested in seeing Synecdoche, NY, it went something like this:
"So what does 'synecdoche' mean?"
"Dunno, why don't you ask Lord Byron over there."
"Wait, I don't have my contacts on today, is that Bill Shakespeare?"
It went on and on like that. Sometimes my life is like a Southwest Commercial. I still had to make a haiku this week though, and it had to make no sense at all. Just... try to make some sense of it, but don't try too hard.Thirsty fish haiku and dunkin donuts is continued here...

Haiku for Obama
Republicans buy shoes too. That was the rumored response by a famous basketball player about why he did not campaign for or endorse a Democratic candidate. Fortunately, I do not sell shoes and I'm not remotely famous. Some people might be hesitant about politicizing their blog in fear of alienating a segment of readers. I really don't see the point of having a blog if you're not going to say what you mean. Plus, people who don't like this can leave for all I care. This week's haiku comes courtesy of my sister and it very accurately represents how I feel about the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election. I want Obama to win. And the truth is that I have unkind words for that other candidate. I won't litter this with those unkind words but I think this is shaping up to be an important election. If you want to register to vote, check out, Go Vote.

Sauce or gravy
Is it sauce or is it gravy? I guess either or works, but sauce was the word for me. When I first learned English, gravy was that brown stuff you put on your mashed potatoes. One of my earliest memories of mashed potatoes was from Old Country Buffet. I was a chubby little kid in the middle of an AARP convention, but they have to be credited for seeding the idea of the "All you can eat" buffet into my fat little head. Sure, their gravy ain't all that but it's brown and it goes on mashed potatoes. And yea everyone around me at the time looked like NFL linemen with white and receding hair. But it was all good. Back to the topic of sauce vs gravy... it's all semantics anyway, so not like it matters to me. Just saying, when you mention gravy, I think mashed potatoes. I'm curious though, what do you think of when you hear the word sauce? When you hear the word gravy?

Autumn haiku and Patisserie Claude
"Thank god man! I was starting to think you were gay!" That's the kind of love I get from my friends. Fucking assholes. Gotta love 'em. Between that and the occasional name calling of, "Dannila" sometimes the love is just endless. Ok, kids, what did we just learn in the last three sentences?
1. Danny can't count.
2. Sometimes he acts like a girl (lipstick?! what lipstick?)
3. OMFG I cussed.
How does that line go again? "Things fall apart; the center cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world." At some point I was going to let foul language on the site, and after a year of doing this... what better time than now?! I won't litter your screen with it THAT much, but consider this a notice for those who are wound as tight as the FCC. Even though language restrictions has fallen apart, my love of stuffing food in my mouth is still in tact. Oh, so are these haikus.Autumn haiku and Patisserie Claude is continued here...

Haiku of wild dog tacos and new york anime festival
I'm on a roll. Two weeks in a row, we have a completely random haiku. It's lovely, ain't it? Lately I just don't feel very poetic on Sundays. This Sunday the fridge was graced with the line, "I want more wild dog tacos." So you see that it just had to be used! I think that line came from Matt, so big props for saving me some work. What would really help the Sunday Haikus (which now mostly fall on Mondays), is if I could have a lifeline.

Haiku of chicken and egg
Fall means it's time for... eggs! And chickens! No not really. I think haiku creation and spiked apple cider probably do not go hand-in-hand. Janice actually tried to help the matter by telling me about the grammatical mistakes in the haiku. Silly rabbit. Me don't care! Actually that's not necessarily true. Most of the time I can't tell correct grammar from incorrect grammar. Luck for you, apple cider season is going to be in full swing. What do you like to drink in the fall? Any suggestions?

Pizza haiku and a giant oreo cookie
You know I just like to do whatever I want, dilly dally here and there. Then freak out about no haiku on Sunday. What do I do? Call the Fed to bail me out?! Things are just easier when someone else does it for you. You know how it is, you come home.. poof! A haiku! I think Justin made this one so mad props there. I just had to change the second line because for some reason it sounded familiar. (Am I running out of words?!) I stare at these magnets too much. Either way, it was nice to come home to a haiku.

Coffee and free food
Yes, once again I am way way way late on the haiku. Hey, sometimes you gotta enjoy your weekend you know? This week the haiku is from... someone. It was there on the fridge when I got home on Sunday, and it was awesome. Not gonna lie, I barely drink coffee even though I love the taste. You notice how coffee addicts behave when there's no coffee around for a whole day? Craaaazy. No sir, I don't wanna be like that at all. Sometimes all you need is a jolt in the morning to wake you up. There's nothing like being half asleep in the morning and sipping coffee to wake up. Ah... I gotta learn to love it.

Labor day version of haiku
September always marks the beginning of fall. College football is underway, and right after you cut the grass in the backyard, the weather is cool enough for you to play backyard football. There's nothing like the smell of freshly cut grass. Be that as it may, I still wish summer would last a few more weeks. I still yearn for grilled food, the taste of summer ingredients, and even the sounds of nature. Yes, pumpkin pies, turkeys, and braised food are all around the corner. But I just want a few... more... weeks! This week I got help yet again on a haiku. Seriously, other people just make my job so much easier and more fun. Gotta love it.

Nonsense haiku and milkshake ambivilance
Fruity cheese is happiness. That's what was up on my fridge when I went to go construct this week's haiku. Whoever made that on the fridge, mad props because it's great. The last line was suggested by Jack when he sent me a picture of a haiku that read, "Haikus Are Simple. But Sometimes They Make No Sense. Refrigerator." I googled it and apparently it's all over the web. Someone once said, "Good artists copy. Great artists steal." So there I go jacking that last line. See, that's how easy it is to be a magnetic poet! First, let others do the work for you, then steal the remaining lines that you need!

Cooked dog haiku
I have never tasted dog. Have you? Apparently it is not on the menu in Beijing during the Olympic games. The haiku is obviously just to test to see if you are still reading the haikus, and to see how many people out there have tasted dog before. My guess is that it is not so special. Many like... a less lambier version of lamb. Who knows, that's just a guess. You gotta hand it to those Chinese (wait a minute, that's racist and I am Chinese!) We eat everything. Did anyone else see that bit they did on NBC where some reporter when to go try fried scorpions? There's supposed to be fried starfish as well. Somehow I really doubt those things taste as good as bacon.

Summer gardens and froyo
Summer is almost over and it always goes by faster than I would prefer. Before you know it, Labor day will be here and hot apple cider will dominate the farmers market in Union Square. I love the Fall and apple cider, but summer is never long enough. Good thing that the Olympics are here to steal my attention. The Olympics are in Beijing this year, and it really makes you wonder about the United States foreign policy. It just seems like China is a ginormous version of North Korea. But since you can build Dell computers and Barbie dolls in Chinese factories, we might as well have the Olympics there. Oh let's not forget about Tibet either or their shiny human rights record. Oh wellz.

Fasting and fast food
"Dude, you lefty our hat here AGAIN." Curtis, my childhood friend would tell me on the phone. I should have tried to correct the problem during my formative years. But I lose a baseball cap at least once a year. Umbrellas? I leave them on restaurant floors or buses with alarming frequency. Two weeks ago, I lost my keys and ate more hot dogs to make myself feel better about this lifelong and unsolvable bad habit.

Haiku cravings and cupcake jones
It is one of those things, where you wake up really excited and all you want to do is devour... buttered bread. Or cupcakes. Or hummus with bacon. Either way, you surely know what I am talking about. Yea... Oh and my bad about a haiku last week. Summer is in full swing and last Sunday I was busy stuffing my face as I tried to get into shape. Wait, that makes no sense... maybe I can just talk about some cupcakes from Portland. We all love PDX, right?

Olive oil haiku
Sometimes these haikus just write themselves. This past week I saw Robyn talk about gelato at Otto and I remembered how awesome the olive oil gelato was, and poof! Haiku! The only problem was that at first I just did another 5-7-4 haiku and had to retake the picture. Seriously folks, sometimes I feel really retarded. Like, give me an adult diaper kind of retarded. Wait, is that politically incorrect? Oh well.

Haiku and I cannot count
There are many rites of passages in a man's life. Learning to walk is a big one. Learning to ride a bike is a doozy as well. Then you have things like falling in love, getting married, starting a family, blah blah. And then you have things like, "learning that you cannot count late at night while high on caffeine." Pepsi does that to you. Or maybe spiked pepsi does that to you. Who is counting anyway? Regardless of the beverage in hand, sometimes when you need a haiku, you need a haiku, even if it is 4-7-5 and not really a haiku. I am not sure what this rite of passage really means, but apparently it means that I need to count with my fingers elementary school style. Will do a better job next time people, I promise.

Fatty beef and cute doggy
Technically, this is not being posted on Sunday... however, since I post one every week, we will just let that slide, right? Today two of my friends asked me, "Yo, update your blog." Uh, come on! It is Memorial Day weekend! Go out! Stop reading blogs! Go take pictures of super cute dogs! Or something. Today we have a haiku that sort of relates to the next post, and you will see what that is about real soon. But I have a story about the cute dog that is posted beneath the jump. Take a look, and let us walk down douchebaggery lane together.

Dog days of sun
Spring in New York has a way of playing with your mind. One hour it will be sunny and the next hour, it will be overcast. And then you find yourself on the Brooklyn Bridge hoping that the sun would come back out. Sometimes you just cannot get what you want with the weather! This week I actually made cookies in my kitchen, but they were devoured too fast before any pictures could be taken. Still, I have dessert on my mind, and today the haiku reflects that. Below the cut is a picture from the Brooklyn Bridge, and a really cool looking dog.

Mothers day edition of Sunday Haiku
Welcome to the Mother's Day edition of the Sunday Haikus. Happy Mother's Day, mom! As y'all can see, today the haiku is extra special. Actually the food edition of magnetic poetry does not have the word 'mom' in there, but I made it in photoshop, that is why it looks slight blue-ish. Just focus on the good part of this magnetic poem. I apologize for being lazy about blogging this week, but tomorrow I will try to give you a good one. It is about a cupcake... so stay tuned. Some of you already know what it is going to be about, and do not spoil the surprise. After the cut we have some pretty flower pictures also for the Mother's Day occasion.

Pork dumplings haiku
Dumplings! I love dumplings, or at least the Asian version. You know how peeps in the South have "Chicken and dumplings?" I definitely prefer dumplings that have a filling. And most of the time, pork filling is the best. You can argue with me about it, but most likely I would just cough in your face. That is not actually a threat, since this stupid cough will not go away. Jeebus. What is wrong with me?! Oh right, haiku. This one is not as suggestive as some of the other ones, but I promise as the skirts get shorter on the sidewalk, my haikus will get awesomer. That is not a word, unless you are Michael Bay. And there are some flower pictures after the cut as filler.

Sunday drink
Sometimes what you need is a good drink, and by sometimes I mean for breakfast on Monday mornings. Just kidding! Sorry about being late with the haiku yesterday, but it was just one of those days. There were some notable entries on the fridge when I checked it out late Sunday, but decided to make a new one and save those for next time when I am REALLY lazy. Seriously though, can you get any lazier than doing a Sunday post on a Monday? Probably not. This past weekend I also ate a cookie. Mmm... chocolate cookie.

I love my fridge
The subject title is actually false. The fridge in my apartment must be from the sixties or something. Just look at the color. It is impossible to color correct on that nasty poo brown. Seriously. GE, WTF? Anyway, I walked into the kitchen this morning and found one line, and decided to work with that. The line was, "breasts taste more delicious in cream." THAT is why I love my fridge, because on any given week, someone will make a line for me, and thus make my job easier. There is another picture after the jump about the original line and my breakfast.

Coffee please
The thing about not drinking coffee and being tired, and then making magnetic poetry on the fridge is that you forget to count. Or maybe that just happens to me. Today I made a 4-7-5 haiku, got excited, took the pictures, went to upload the pictures, then realized, "Old people poo. I need one more word." That is just how it goes. Maybe one of these days I will start drinking coffee, but it always makes my heart go insane and that is not really conducive for work. Since it is spring, I will end this post with a picture of flowers and a picture of a dog because food in mouth is the most awesome and irrelevant picture blog on Sundays.

A day late
You know the thing about posting on Sunday is that if the weather is really nice, you just want to leave the apartment and NOT post. Oops. This has to stop! I need to make an effort to be more on top of it. I was also feeling a little bit lazy, luckily my roommate's boyfriend (Justin, thanks!) came through again with another haiku. This is the great thing about having roommates, because you come home and all of a sudden there is a haiku on the fridge. It is like magic, but more poetic. The apartment is like a refuge for foodie Shakespeares, dusted with iambic pentameter and couplets. Sometimes, we will even make the haikus suitable for little kids (which means I did not write it), and we always have to think about the kids, right?

Cask ales and haiku
The 1st Manhattan Cask Ale Festival is going on right now at the Chelsea Brewery right now. I actually have no idea what a cask ale is, but beer + festival = win. If you are reading this in time, I encourage you to check it out. It runs through today, March 30, 2008. And since it is Sunday, there is of course the Sunday Haiku. Originally I had a really really inappropriate haiku that was NC-17, but then I decided against it.

Pillow fight and haiku
I am try to write haikus without any innuendos but some of you flickr folks are pretty amazing at picking out the innuendos where they do not exist. One of these days I have to try to come up with a haiku that is blatantly suggestive that we can stop talking about it and just giggle like little schoolgirls. And that is what happened when I made the first haiku this week, which had something to do with tacos and love making. Just saying. Yesterday was also Pillow Fight Day! How many of you went? I took over 300 pictures but it is a pain to process them all. Later this week they will be on flickr but for now I offer one picture.

Sunday Haiku take two
And we are back with another haiku this Sunday. This one was inspired by my roommates boyfriend, and I figured it was easy to just add line one and line three to the masterfully constructed line two. Collaboration is what it is about. I like how when Jonathan wrote a guest post this past week, and it got stumbled, it became one of the highest trafficked post on the blog. So hurray for other people giving me content! Here at Food in Mouth, everything is about deliciousness, therefore I shall close this post with two more pictures after the jump.

Haiku Sunday take one
Wow, I am super late to post this again, my apologies. You can see from this week that I put forth more effort into the magnetic poetry. Instead of one line, you now have THREE. I would actually like to call this a haiku, but since my internal abacus is off, maybe this is not actually five-seven-five. And I leave you with a story from Saturday... wait, maybe it was Friday...

Today I decided to bring us back down to PG, since last Sunday was a little uh.. pg-13. haha. Kids these days, they grow up SO fast! Phew. Anyway, this probably speaks for itself and makes sense. Next Sunday I want to compose something even longer, but these magnets are stuck to the fridge for some reason. Super hard to peel off and move around. But alas, I am a trooper and I will do it for my lovely readers. By the way, if you use a reader and want to subscribe, the feed is in the sidebar on the right side of the page. And now, for a random story...

Snowy sunday
Oh right, blogging should be done on regular intervals... My excuse for forgetting the Sunday magnetic poetry was that it SNOWED. For those of you who do not live in the city, basically all winter long we have only had dustings of snow that were pathetic. This past Friday it actually snowed and it was glorious. It sent me on a completely fit of joy; I woke up both of my roommates by jumping up and down screaming, "OMG, WE HAVE SNOW!!!" Sometimes it is the little things. A word about the magnetic poetry since it completely breaks my own rule, which is to be as Disney/Nickelodeon as possible. This is just injecting a little Jamie Lynn Spears into the blog; you thought it was just fun and games, but whoooooa nelly! (I am kidding, if you are reading this from a Red state, I am so so sorry for you) After the jump are some photos of snow, cuz that is how I roll.

Craving meat on Sunday
This past week I tried to go the whole week without eating meat. The writeup will come tomorrow, but the magnetic poetry for today expresses what my body is screaming out at the moment. Life is missing something! Anyway, I am off to search for something buttery and delicious and meat free on my last day of no-meat-week. I leave you with one additional picture under the cut, it is from a few years ago when I made burgers at home. More to come tomorrow. (How awesome is President's Day, huh?)

Pre Valentines magnetic poetry
Since Singles Awareness Day Valentines Day is coming up soon, it seems appropriate to have magnetic poetry that sort of fits. And that is what we have today, the magnetic poetry gods command you to indulge in salty romantic comforts; just interpret that how you well, these gods are fickle and terse. There are two more random pictures after the jump. One is from a hot pot outing when I was too lazy to take pictures, and another was from a secret spot. Any one have a guess on where my vantage point was?

Super sunday magnets
Sunday is here again. And no regular Sunday at that! It is super bowl weekend! Too bad I think the Giants are in for a tough game. Since I am too lazy to post real words on the weekends, it is just the magnetic poetry picture up there. It is better than no posts at all right? Now I have to go out and figure out what is up with the fast food situation tonight and the beer. Nothing says, "Football rocks" like some KFC. Yea some of you just upchucked in the back of you throat a little. It is fine. I will eat all the trans fats you do not want.
