Spring haiku with poyk but no perservatlves

Haiku time! This week Justin made a haiku on the fridge and voila! It's quite a good haiku. Someone told me haikus are supposed to be about the weather and stuff like that. Poetic shit. Not hot dogs or pizza haikus. Who knew? Since the weather started to get better in New York this weekend, this haiku is really appropo. Spring is great because it means all the vegetables will be in season at some point soon, and there will be lots of outdoor dining going on once it's consistently warm outside. This past weekend in Park Slope, you could already see signs of that... [Continue reading]

Melty chocolate haiku and letter grades

First let me say, this haiku is two weeks early for Valentines Day. If I had been on-time, I could have posted something about football. Instead we get something about chocolate. Um.. yea. Anyway... Wow, lots of stuff going on in the food world this week. I never read much on the weekend, and just now I caught up on twenty tabs worth of reading in Firefox. I should probably figure out that whole RSS reader thing, huh? A few weeks ago in a post that no one read, I ranted forever about possible stale cakes in Asian bakeries and food grades from the Department of Health in the city of Los Angeles. Midtown Lunch has some coverage and comments about the issue. My viewpoint on this remains the same - this is a great idea. I almost cannot believe there's any credible, logical, and plausible argument against this. If anyone out there has any, I would love to hear it. The best part about arguments against it is that people think of extremes and how crazy this idea can become. And people forget that we have a living, breathing case study in the form of letter grades in the SECOND BIGGEST city in America. It seems to work fine.... [Continue reading]

Year of the ox haiku

I was asking Jonathan online about what I was supposed to do during Chinese New Year. He gave me some fairly straight forward advice - eat whole fish and ask for money (Hong Bao). The banana-fication of my soul has brainwashed me and I barely remember asking for those things as a child. For those not familiar with the tradition, basically little kids get spoiled with money during Chinese new year. I don't remember whatever happened to the money after New Years though... maybe they all went into my "trying to use cavities to make grillz all the way back in the 80's" fund. Yea I'm a candy fan.... [Continue reading]

Haiku - one man stands

Inauguration haiku

Man, what an inauguration right? I guess it's too late to tell you to turn away if you're not into blatant pro-Obama talk on this blog. What a speech! Ah... I love it. It was important to find a haiku that's on the theme of the inauguration. Of course no haiku could ever serve it justice, at least not a haiku limited to food words. This week I'm glad that the haiku comes after a Tuesday. Posts are easier to write when you're happy with life and full of hope for the country.... [Continue reading]

Fat child haiku and a food policy for Obama

The haiku this week sort of describes me, minus the wild part and the fried pickle part. I was indeed a fat child, but fried pickles were never really part of my diet. This year I'm going to try to eat more vegetables and fruits though, instead of just cupcakes, burgers, or bacon. But mmmm... pork products. They're just so delicious and full of nutrients. I mean, if you can't actually see high cholesterol and blood pressure, that means it's not there. Same principle for Santa, Easter Bunny, and unicorns. Ah... it all makes sense now....
