Food in Mouth

swingle-bite

My once a year Swingle

Some things you just eat once a year, but you seemingly eat it every year. I actually can't think of many things that are like that, since if I see a food that is affordable, delicious and easily obtainably year round, I'm gonna buy it. So three out of the last four years I've been to the Atlantic Antic Street Fair and I want to make it a tradition to always have a swingle. The reason I don't eat this all the time is simple. The shop that makes it, Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pies is in Red Hook and I'm lazy. The second reason is that it's $5 dollars. I love this awesome food item enough to eat it when I pass by it, but not enough to trek out to the store and buy it there. So once a year, I eat it at the Antic.... [Continue reading]

Lines and more lines at Le Fooding

What's the going rate for a handjob these days? What? That's no way to open a post for a food blog? Yea whatever. But before we get to all of this, in the interest of full-disclosure, I will say that I tried to get a press pass for this event called Le Fooding but was denied. I was however, able to score a ticket on the black market. So while all the other coverage out there might have glitzy pictures that's actually not-blurry, I can only offer some blurry pictures and talk about whether an event like this is worth $50 or $80, depending on your ticket. And whether you're betting off going to a street hooker or a sex shop to buy a toy. Basically you had the option to buy a VIP ticket for $80 and go an hour early before the throng of people mobbed the scene, or pay $50 and just go with the mob. I just figure that the really honest writeup should tell you folks what you should do with your money, and whether something like this is worth it for you in the future.... [Continue reading]

Mmm... Big Apple BBQ Block Party

Big Apple Block Party BBQ 2010

. It's a yearly event that draws thousands of New Yorkers out to sample fine BBQ from all over the country. The last two years, I've been going for both days, always strategically going early to avoid the long lines and the crazy heat. This year, with the World Cup in play and cooler weather, the elements weren't as bad as previous years. You still had BBQ that range from a little dry to pretty damn good, so you just have to pick your spots on where you want to go. This year I made stops to Ed Mitchel's for whole hog, Rack-n-Soul for some ribs, and Moonlite BBQ from Kentucky.... [Continue reading]

New York Wine and Food Festival

This past Saturday I was lucky enough to attend a Grand Tasting Event at the New York Wine & Food Festival. If you haven't heard much about this festival in previous years, it's because this was the first year of the festival in New York. Previously it was in Miami. All the net proceeds go towards helping Food Bank NYC and the Share Our Strength foundation. It's good fun for a good cause. And I would have written about this earlier as a good blogger should, but I caught a disease. That disease is called Fantasy Basketball. You might not have known about this but it sucks away your free time and totally consumes you. I know this is not a fake illness because Jonathan told me it's true. He's a doctor and he's staying at a Holiday Inn Express right now. So I'll brave the symptoms of Fantasy basketball (sweaty palms, extreme anxiousness towards the start of the NBA season), and tell you about all the New York Wine & Food Festival.... Jim Lahey and NYCE

The New York Culinary Experience was this past weekend. It was a cozy event with about 100 attendees, and I was able to join in on a bread class on Sunday morning. Jim Lahey of Sullivan Street Bakery here in New York City. Most of the classes this past weekend had 24 participants, but for a no-knead bread class at 9am on Sunday? Two participants. It was a small and intimate. I prefer sleeping in on Sundays, but I had a blast getting up early and listening to Jim talk about bread.... [Continue reading]
