Next Restaurant in pictures

GUEST POST Today we have an epic guest post for all the readers of Food in Mouth. Jonathan who blogs at Hungry in Milwaukee went to Next Restaurant with his wife Grace and has an epic account of the meal. Many of you probably know all about Next Restaurant, but for those who need a refresher, it's a new restaurant by Grant Achatz and Nick Kononas. They previously partnered on Alinea, which you can read about here (also from Jonathan). The restaurant features a focus on foods from different historical periods. Right now it's 1906 Paris, France. They also have a slick new ticketing system instead of a reservation system. Secondary markets for their tickets have already been seen on Craigslist. So both in food and price discrimination terms, Next Restaurant seems to be paving the way. The Executive Chef is Dave Beran, so let's see what the creative team from Alinea and Chef Beran has in store from Paris, 1906.... [Continue reading]

Calumet Fisheries

The sign in Calumet Fisheries in Chicago, IL reads, "This is our one & only store. We have no other stores." I like that. It's something you don't see much anymore. In New York, there's always this regret over gentrification. We want something from a generation ago. We want something like Calumet Fisheries. This store that sits at the end of a bridge and has done so since 1948. They smoke everything on-site. Because what they do is so damn delicious, it's a wonder that not more restaurants copy what they do. The fishery does smoked fish and shrimp. With charm to spare, it's a place that feels like it's from another era and a place that makes you wish someone here in NY would reproduce something so delicious.... [Continue reading]

Don Pedro Carnitas

Don Pedro Carnitas

One of these days I'm going to die and won't be able to try any more delicious food throughout the world. Although to be fair, my world in the past year consisted of New York, Detroit, Paris (and Brittany), and Chicago. That's not a bad mix actually... but man, there's not enough time in the world to enjoy all that exists. As much as I would love to just live as a hedonist and be concerned about present consumption... how do I pay for future consumption? Hmm.. tough question, and there's way too many tough questions in life. Why don't I just worry about what to eat? Thankfully when Steph and I were in Chicago, it wasn't a big concern because Jonathan and Grace took care of it. And I don't even know if I can get around to posting all of it, but we had a Memorial Day that was memorable because my stomach almost exploded. One of the hightlights (and there were many) during the day (and that doesn't count the dinner that night... on my jeebus), was a stop at Don Pedro Carnitas (yelp).... [Continue reading]

Terzo Piano

"I think the blogosphere is the future." That's from Anthony Bourdain. For a minute there I was having a crisis about what all this is about. You know, being a blogger and stuff. Steph and I were in Chicago for a couple of days and it was really great. If there's anything I've learned since the super duper France trip, and this recent Chicago trip... it's that one person could never eat it all. Seriously, there's great food everywhere you turn... sure you might have to do a little digging (in the blogosphere) to find out where the best stuff is. There were great pastries in Paris and there seemed to be an unlimited amount of good food in Chicago. I'm telling you that we ate SUPER well and didn't even sniff a Chicago-style hot dog or pizza. It was my secret plan to have an excuse to go back to Chicago in the near future. That's neither here nor there... One of the days we had brunch/lunch at Terzo Piano. One of the reasons we picked it was because it was close to the hotel... and because Jonathan put it on the map for us. It was very good.... [Continue reading]

Jibek Jolu in Chicago

Guest Post! Jonathan is back with another tale from Chicago. Kyrgyz food looks interesting. I don't even know if we have that here in NY... but read on for the delicious tale!

I had to look on a map to find Kyrgyzstan. Actually, I first had to find out how to spell it, before I could find the central Asian country officially known as the Kyrgyz Republic. As I had guessed (clearly), it is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west, Tajikistan to the southwest and China to the east. So much work before heading off to a restaurant! It was like homework. But I had to know a little about what I was about to eat.... [Continue reading]
