Goat tacos at the Red Hook Ball Fields
Lately I've taken some pleasure in writing about personal shortcomings like how I tip terribly. It's an on-going investigation really, as all good things in life are. Here's a thought I have... standing at the Red Hook Ball Fields eating tacos or sitting down at a restaurant in Chinatown/Flushing... I wonder, "How many illegal immigrants are within one square mile of where I am right now?" Is it possible that every single Latino or Asian person around me either has a proper work/tourist visa, green card, or U.S. citizenship? And what does it say about me if I question these people around me? Who knows? The good news is that I don't spend too much time thinking about it because the food usually provides such a great distration. A couple of weekends ago Steph and I went to get some tacos at the Red Hook Ball Fields and man... they were great. $3 dollars with tax included is a decent price. Sunset Park might still offer the best value, but for the ambiance and the summery setting of eating your tacos on the grass next to a soccer field... well, it's worth it.

Love and eating huarache
Huarache, I know this is going to sound weird. But... do you believe in love at first sight? The kind of love that makes you feel like you know the food? Maybe in a different life? Do you remember? I know it won't make sense. A few days ago I was reading blogs, and I saw you... it was like i was hit over the head... all these memories came washing back. Like it was part of my life, but it was another life. In those memories, I remember there was a plane crash, and I was on an island... you were there. We knew each other... liked each other. Now I can't get you out of my brain that's why when I saw you, I had to have you. Maybe you don't remember me... But it's ok.. I know, I'm crazy.

The Blue Stove
Just now on tv, I saw a commercial from NYC Dept of Health about how sodas and sugary beverages are full of fat and you could gain up to ten pounds a year. It features this guy who looks like he's drinking gooey fat straight from a glass and then they show fat plopping down on a plate. It's all very delicious. Also funny that the commercial run right after the local news reports about the James Beard Awards. This is the first time that I've had cable TV in my living room since... ever. So even watching a gross commercial is exciting. I tell you what else is exciting... PIES. Sweet pies to be exact, not those pizza pies. They're awesome too but not for this post. This post is about a strawberry rhubarb pie from The Blue Stove in Williamsburg.

Bark Hot Dog in Park Slope
Possessing two left feet is not an easy task. Just as blond hair and blue eyes are physical traits, I'd argue that coordination and balance are traits as well. Sure, they're more like things you can level up, but just as a mage can level up on magic, it upgrades differently from a Night Elf Mohawk. Obviously. But possessing two left feet means that things like dancing becomes difficult. I mean, how does one become, Carlton Fisk?!? What I like about Carlton's dance is that it's unusual. In general, when you have a dance, whether it be the tango or salsa, there's a promise to deliver on requisite steps. I kind of think that's what restaurants are. Well-known genres like Italian or Japanese are your waltz or foxtrot. The hot dog shack, is the macarena. It's down to earth, popular, and easily digestible (if you're over 12). So when you go into a hot dog place, you want them to deliver and to have no missteps. Bark hot dogs in Park Slope does just that.

Cubana Cafe in Park Slope
It's aight. I'm trying to test that out as my new favorite phrase because Steph tells me that my current go-to answer, "I don't know" just isn't going to cut it anymore. If for some reason you were frozen through all of the late 90s and early 2000s, those two words mean, "It's alright" As with all phrases, you can use it in many ways. It could be pretty straight. For example if someone asked me about that new show, How to make it in America, the response would be a straight up "It's aight." If someone asked me about one of my new favorite shows, White Collar, I'd respond with an understated "It's aight" because I don't want to oversell a show that's basically a character (Bryce Larkin) from my other favorite show (Chuck), just being a badass. And if someone asked me "Yo, you check out chatroulette?" My answer would be a nervous "It's aight" because that shit is outta this world. And don't do that to yourself folks. When it comes to a nice neighborhood place for food, a content and straight forward "It's aight" is exactly what you want, and Cafe Cubana is just that.

Island of Taiwan restaurant
Sometimes the dissonance between my blogging self and my real life self reverberates and echoes so loudly and far, that I feel very much like a poser. It's difficult to really express about food in real life the way one could if one has pictures and time to put thoughts together. I suppose that's the genius of someone like Anthony Bourdain, who can do it on TV, and consistently deliver week after week. Most of the time, the enjoyment occurs silently and the message conveyed to others is muted. Even though the world we occupy is more about the gradients than the black-n-whites, it's easier for me to divide the world in one big stroke for the sake of this blog. I think the world is divided into three camps of eaters. One is the Giadas. This is named after Giada from the food network. Each bite for her is a porno sound track fitting only if you orgasm anytime something touches your tongue. How her clit ended up in her mouth is a mystery to me. Those are the lucky ones. On the opposite end of the spectrum you have folks like me. We'll call this group The Creepy Pubescent Teenage boy group. For folks like me, eating for pleasure can be compared to reading a Playboy for the first time. Initially there's shock at how good it is, and then there's quiet enjoyment for the fear that there would be a knock-less intruder at your door, catching you at a very compromising (and embarrassing moment). The third group involves people somewhere in the middle. Maybe you're in that middle group, but I'm firmly in the quiet enjoyment group. My most recent food trip to Island of Taiwan probably was one of the most enjoyable meals in a while.

Almondine in Park Slope
Last night Wii fit told me that I'm 45-years-old. As a 27-year-old, I'm not sure how to feel about this. And then the Wii fit told me that the optimum BMI is around 22 whereas mine is around 25. Whodda thunk it, a food blogger on the cusp of being listed as 'overweight'. If my mom is reading this now, she'll probably pick up the phone and call me in a minute to remind me not to eat too many hamburgers. Rest easy mom, I've only been eating french fries... and sweet potato fries... and fried dumplings. I suppose it doesn't help to eat pumpkin ice cream with a big spoon while I weigh myself... The thing is, I'm 5'8 and 166 and it doesn't feel like too much! Damn you Wii fit. So here's the kicker, the game asks you to set a goal. So I figured a good goal is to get to a BMI of 22. Guess how much weight loss that would require? 17 pounds!!!! Man I haven't been 149 since 7th grade. Crazy. Oh yea, so I also like to eat pastries. Lots and lots of pastries, because butter keeps my doctor on edge. To satisfy my urge, I went to Almondine

East Harbor dim sum and the taste of sameness
Why is it that Chinatowns in the United States are mostly a dingy and grimy affair? You see some pristine looking Little Tokyos in the U.S., but Chinatowns? There's always a special smell associated. Perhaps it's inescapable as most Chinatowns are filled with restaurants and at some point, you put out the trash, and that's never going to be too pleasant. I went to the Brooklyn Chinatown to get some dim sum this past weekend and you know, just because land is cheaper in Brooklyn doesn't mean folks will space it out more or anything like that. It's just as dirty and grimy in Brooklyn's Chinatown as any other Chinatown. And the dim sum? Delicious and cheap, although the separation line between Brooklyn and Manhattan dim sum parlors is a thin one.

Red Hook Lobster Pound and grits
Spending my formative years in Nashvegas, aka Cashville (and that's Nashville for those of you not familiar with the nicknames), it probably meant that I was exposed to a good deal of Southern food. Nope. There was good food at home and the value proposition was great for a high schooler without a job. Free food from Mom was awesome. Also, back then I never knew that it would be useful to know more about Southern cuisine. Really, the only ribs I ever had down there weren't from Memphis; they probably came from Chili's or Tony Romas. I wasn't raised on grits because Chinese people have a different version of a warm, soft, mushy comfort food (read: congee). Now that I'm old and gray, I've taken a liking to Southern food, although I have no idea what's good or what's not. Some people enjoy specific types of grits, and they enjoy stone ground grits. Ask me to identify the difference? Just throw some cheese and shrimp on grits on mine please. What about if you throw some LOBSTER on the grits? Oh, then I'm really all about that!

Atlantic Antic 2009
Woo! Street fair! Most of these things aren't worth attending. The 5th Avenue Street Fair in Park Slope is one exception. The Atlantic Antic is another. Usually the socks stands to unique food stands is a telltale sign of a street fair's worthiness. If there are more stands selling socks than original food stands, then skip it. Original food stands would the the ones not selling corn, mozzarepa, or italian sausage with peppers. Although really, I'm just looking for street fairs that don't sell too many socks. Another great thing about the Atlantic Antic is that it's probably one of the last street fairs of the year until the next summer.

Brunch at Rose Water in Park Slope
Sometimes you go eat at a hyped up neighborhood place, and all you wanna do after, is make like Peggy Olson and strap on the Relaxerciser. You know, because it was so disappointing and you need some satisfaction. Yea you know what I'm talking about, unless you don't watch Mad Men. That's ok. I haven't seen The Wire, and we can't all be perfect. Neither can Rose Water's brunch. The thing about brunch is that I'm rarely impressed. Woo, you have french toast and you used challah bread. It's going to be decently tasting enough. So usually I end up ordering something else... basically anything else on the 'brunch' menu that looks like it has lots of fat and could possibly exist on a non-brunch meanu.

Egg McMuffin for breakfast
Whenever I read about another food blogger or writer's experience, and there's a "revelation", I'm always surprised. The reason is that honestly, even with all the delicious food in the world, quite few are such a revelation that I remember it years and years down the line. Maybe it's because McDonald's is such a large part of the culture here in the U.S., but my first food revelation came from the golden arches. It wasn't even a big mac, which I didn't have until high school. No, the first thing that I remember about McDonalds was the breakfast sandwich. It was the Sausage and Egg McMuffin.

Motorino Pizza
For someone who's not completely chill wit the dairy, it's a wonder that I've been kind of obsessed with dairy products lately. I've already made six different types of ice cream since breaking in the ice cream maker. For those keeping score at home, that was maybe four weeks ago, so I've averaged more than one quart of ice cream a week. Either my gym or the clothing store is going to see me more consistently. In addition to ice cream, I've been hooked on reading about pizza. I haven't actually consumed that much, but there's been lots of chatter in the New York food scene about pizza. Of course whenever Frank Bruni writes a bit for the Times, it gets everyone's attention. One of the places that Bruni mentioned was Motorino, and they're about to take over the space that was once Una Pizza Napolitana. So I went to check out this Motorino place that's supposed to be so good.

Checkers french fries and speaking freely
If you like fresh hamburgers grilled/griddled to order, then please turn away. If you like hand cut fries that come from real potatoes, I got nothing for you. But if you want 1700 calories of greasy goodness that's sure to kill you in fifty years? Well I got just the thing. Ever since they added calorie counts to the fast food menus, it's been a lot of fun to see how much you're getting when you think about getting two filet o fish or something. I went to the newly opened Checker's on Court street, and combo number one ranged from 1400 to 1700 calories. Since I requested my Fanta without ice, and since the cup was way too big to be just a 'medium', I probably got 1700 or more calories from lunch on Sunday. Of course three hours later I also went and ate an arepa slathered with some tasty mayo. Sometimes you just really have to fill up, you know? Anyway, so let's talk about Checker's, or Rally's, depending on what part of the country you're from.

Fifth Avenue Street Fair
Whenever there's a street fair in New York City, there's always people selling one special item. It's not lemonade or sausages or funnel cake or even mozerella filled corn cakes. It's socks. For some strange reason there's always at least one table where some dude is selling like five pairs of socks for ten dollars. Yesterday in the Fifth Avenue Street Fair in Park Slope, there was even a table that proclaimed they had the "World's softest socks." They didn't look like the softest socks in the world, so I passed. My focus was on the food. I wanted to really like the Fifth Avenue Street Fair even though most street fairs suck. But this time, I found a $5 dollar pulled pork sandwich from Bonnie's Grill that might change my view on street fairs.

Tacos Nuevos Mexico in Park Slope
I'm beginning to think that I love tacos as much as Asian food. Tacos satisfy all things that I look for in a food item. One, they're usually cheap and served on paper plates. Two, they're usually found in neighborhoods where white folks don't wanna live (yet). Rule number two is really important because otherwise it would affect the price, and make rule number one a moot point. Everyone who know about tacos still like to say that New York stuff doesn't even sniff the west coast stuff. This may be true, but here's where it helps to be ignorant. Last month, the Village Voice food blog talked about Tacos Nuevos Mexico in Park Slope. I had to go check this out...

Fried chicken wings and fried rice
There's probably a fantastic, recession friendly meal just a few blocks from where you're sitting now. These type of places are usually generic Chinese take-out places. You know the ones, the first item on the menu is fried half chicken with french fries. When I first encountered these type of restaurants, I scoffed at their misrepresentation of real Chinese food. But during those first few post college years, surviving on cheap food was a necessity. So if you can find one of those generic Chinese take-out places, and you see 'Fried chicken wings and fried rice' on the menu, you should try it out. It's a super simple thing that's very delicious. It's fried chicken, how can it be bad?

Zuzu Ramen opens in Park Slope
MacLaren's, banh mi's, and ramen. Park Slope now has it all. Two weeks ago it was banh mi in Park Slope. This week it's ramen from Zuzu Ramen. While I was disappointed with my experiences at Hanco's, I was very pleased when after a late dinner at Zuzu Ramen last night. It's about damn time we got some ramen in Park Slope. What, you expect yuppies to go all the way to Manhattan for Japanese noodles?

Hancos and high rent
Michael and Scottie. Rainbows and unicorns. Swedish meatballs and ligonberry sauce. Vietnamese and Park Slope. That's right SAT guru's, the one that doesn't fit is the last one. I never would have expected to find Vietnamese food in Park Slope, yet that's exactly what I found this past weekend. Right after the discovery, I was reignited with the sensation of eating money. See, whenever I overpay for something, it's automatically impossible for me to enjoy it. It's like if you ever eat Rick Shaw's Dumplings, you automatically think that you're chewing a Susan B. Anthony. At Hanco's, it's kind of the same.

Yun Nan Flavour Snack
There are people who blink when served with pork intestines as a topping and then there are people like me. This past weekend I was super excited to find that the noodles with crispy pork from Yun Nan Flavour Snack had crispy pork along with pork intestines as a topping. Normally I would say you can separate people into the ones who eat intestines and those who don't. But really, how many of you out there even like intestines? Seriously, it's not one of those things that's easy to like but when you've had good intestines... man you just love it. Yun Nan Flavour Snack has good ones in their noodles with crispy pork.

Brunch at Los Pollitos
Everyone has one of those neighborhood standbys that they can count on for a solid meal. It's usually a place that's pretty popular in the hood and the food is pretty good. It's hardly ever mind blowing food because if it was that good, you'll never get a seat. As long as it's good enough and tasty and accommodating for you and your friends/family, then it's a great spot. Los Pollitos II is one such place around Park Slope. I'm sure there are haters or whatever, but other common favorites like Al Di La or Franny's just aren't cheap enough to become a regular dining destination.

Peanut butter cookie from Trois Pommes
Happy New Year! That gets old after a while so this will be my official post to wish everyone well in 2009. It should be a great year full of good eats like burgers, cupcakes, pizzas, and of course, cookies. The cookie you see here is from Trois Pommes Patisserie in Park Slope Brooklyn. Sometimes people say that a certain food item was a revelation, as if it could transcend the boundaries of food and change your life. This didn't exactly happen, but I did have a revelation while I ate the cookie. It's not exactly the same, you see.

Burger at The General Greene
When you read enough blogs about hamburgers, you come to find out about the mysterious thing of the outter crust on a hamburger patty. I think my very first hamburger was probably McDonalds or Wendy's and honestly I don't remember. Those things don't have crusts. The Shake Shack burger supposedly develops a nice crust on the outside of the patty but I've mostly encountered inconsistent crustiness (but that's not a diss on SS, still love their burgers). First bite of the burger at The General Greene was a lesson on a hamburger with a solid crust. Unfortunately it was also a lesson on too much crust.

Fornino and my educated mother
My very educated mother just served us nine pizzas. That was one of the first things I learned after starting third grade. It's a mnemonic device used for learning the nine planets in our solar system, although now pluto is not a planet anymore. Does this mean in the future, educated mothers won't serve nine pizzas but instead will server nachos? What a sad thought. I'm happy to report that even though I've always remembered the mnemonic device, I have no idea what the nine planets are without looking it up. That is really sad. Inversely correlated with the level of my stupidity is the awesomeness of Fornino's pizza. One weekend I found myself in Williamsburg. The weather was especially chilly, and the pizza at Fornino really warmed me up.

Birch beer haiku and Blue Marble ice cream
My weekend disappeared and it felt so good. This past Friday Gears of War 2 came out and I have been camping at my friends apartment. This is probably what Meth addicts do when they get something new to shoot up. Fortunately the only downside to xbox 360 is sleep deprivation. This week's haiku is about birch beer, which I thought was the same thing as root beer. Wikipedia says no. Well, whatever wikipedia says is the truth. Recently I had some root beer at the Shake Shack on the UWS, and I saw Tina of The Wandering Eater try the root beer at Momofuku Ssam Bar. I just want to drink root beer and play horde all day long. This work thing is getting in the way.

Donut Luncheonette and The 2008 Election
This is my favorite donut place (for now). What you see is the unpretentious version of the donut. It doesn't need any small business tax breaks. It owns up to its burden of being more filling and less frills. It's a hard working donut for the everyman. You don't need no foodie palette to enjoy this. If you're down to earth and you like donuts, you'll love donuts from the Donut Luncheonette. They could rename themselves, Joe the Donut and I wouldn't be able to think of a more appropo name.

Let them eat donuts but maybe not Trois Pommes donuts
Trois Pommes Patisserie is a pleasant bakery in the heart of Park Slope. Normally, when the fundamentals of the economy are strong, I probably would be okay with a $3 donut. But since the DOW is near 10 year lows, I feel weird about $3 dollar donuts even if I could afford to eat one every now and then. The truth is I don't frequent bakeries and when the nice lady said it was $3, my heart sang a tune because it wasn't as expensive as Bouchon's jelly-filled donut. See that? That's pretty crazy when you can think, "This $3 dollar donut is 25% off from the more expensive donut!" The problem I have versus most other food bloggers is that I can't compare $4 dollar donuts with Dunkin Donuts and recommend the 400% premium. It just makes no sense. And even at a 300% premium, it still makes no sense.

67 Burger is a good meal
I used to have this thing about finishing everything on my plate. Not sure when it really started but it goes something like this, "Some people can't find enough food to eat and you're gonna throw it away? You prick. Finish him! (btw, only the first 30 seconds of that video is relevant.. ) But that was before I started Food in Mouth and eating like Britney Spears post-pregnancy. So when Pat and I were at 67 Burger, it pained me to walk away from half a basket of sweet potato fries. We had to choose, finish the burger or finish the fries.

DiFaras is pizza heaven
It was worth it, and you should go. No, I'm not talking about a Miley Cyrus concert. Although her concerts probably ARE worth it... Di Fara's Pizza in Brooklyn is worth all the hype. I love sports and you hear about hyped athletes all the time. Di Fara's is no Andy Roddick. It's more like Roger Federer. Subtle, understated, and the best. If you do research on the pizza blog Slice, you can see that Di Fara's is ranked up there among the best pizzas in the U.S. High praise for sure, but the pizza backs the claims. If you have a chance to get some of this pizza, do yourself a favor and hurry up.

Etons
This might be a signal of what kind of a guy I am, but I love "dollar dumplings". If you frequent Chinatown, you know what's up - five dumplings for a dollar. (Crazy right?) Lately prices have gone up on those things. Places like Dumpling House and Tasty Dumpling have increased the price to four dumplings for a dollar. (Inflation = major fail!). When you are hungry for a snack, nothing is better or cheaper. But the taste is often indistinguishable from one place to another. You have to pay more for robust tasting dumplings and you can find those at Eton's in Carroll Gardens.

Red hook ballfields
I hate myself sometimes. More often, I hate other people. For example, Ralph Nader voters in Florida in the year 2000. Those people? I hate you, cross my heart, hope to die, stick a needle in my eye. A vote in one direction is a non-vote in another; a vote for Nader was a vote against Gore and a vote for Bush, as it turned out. And this past weekend I turned into the Red Hook ball park version of a Nader voter. If you have not been keeping score, New York City officials cracked down on the Red Hook vendors last year and required them to have permits and get actual food trucks with proper sanitation. So the only natural thing for me to do this past weekend was to subvert the rules and buy food from a vendor that was clearly not in a food truck, but instead a picnic table.

Habana Outpost
Cuban sandwiches are one of those things that always makes me happy. It is really difficult to screw up a cuban because the only thing that can make it bad is if it is overly dry. If you use too much bread or if the pork is insanely dry, then it would not be a good sandwich. Last week I stopped by Habana Outpost in Ft. Greene and I was greeted with an imperfect Cuban Sandwich experience.

Cake Man Raven is mad delicious
On my way to the Brooklyn Flea last Sunday, I randomly walked by Cake Man Raven. I vacillated between stuffing my face or walk straight to the flea market. Guess which one I picked... First heard about this place three years ago when the Times' Dining Section did a piece on Raven Dennis and he sounded like the perfect fourth uncle that I never had. You know, those terms like 'second-cousin' or 'third-cousin' totally throw me off. Why not just do it in a more simple way? You walk up to your relative, and say, "Yea we tight. (do a secret hand shake)" and based upon how smooth the secret hand shake is, that is how well you know your relative. Right, so I like cake. You like cake. You will like Cake Man Raven.

Shirred eggs at Ici
Have you ever had shirred eggs? I walked into Ici last weekend, after taking snow pictures in Ft. Greene, and "shirred eggs with bacon and greens" totally jumped out at me. Who does not like new kinds of food that one has never had? It is like Christmas on a plate, and as a person who does not celebrate xmas, I will take this instead. But shirred eggs are baked eggs, and when the friendly server told me that, I was sold. And boy, that was a great idea because shirred eggs at Ici will rock your knickers off.

The Smoke Joint
The most perfect day ever started out innocuously enough. Yea, the AFC and NFC Championship games were going to be on TV, but whatever. Hunger called our names and we listened. Originally I wanted to walk over to Carroll Gardens but it was twenty-five degrees outside - not optimal weather for a fifteen minute walk just for eating. For some random reason The Smoke Joint came to mind as something that would be a great way to start the day. Speaking of which, is the first meal of the day always breakfast or is it lunch if you eat it at 2pm? Or is that, "Danny, wake up earlier on the weekends?"
