Trying cupcakes at Georgetown Cupcakes
Cupcakes still have their haters. Even with many detractors, the movement will probably continue to grow. Over thinking the cause behind the movement is useless. Sometimes people just like something. Cupcakes are inherently more adorable than pies, doughnuts, or cookies. A little frosting goes a long way to winning the hearts of those who love rainbows and unicorns. Did you know there's a show called My Little Pony Friendship is Magic? Why does it exist? It's cute. Cupcakes are similarly cute. The craze is big in Washington D.C. too. One of the most famous cupcake shops in DC even has a show on TLC called DC Cupcakes. It's the Magnolia's of Washington DC.
Their main shop in the Georgetown area of DC is bright and clean. The prices are normal by New York standards. $2.75 is all you need to get in on this craze. And it is a craze. Stop by around noon on a Saturday and you'll be greeted by a line that takes 15 minutes to get into the cupcake shop. Georgetown Cupcakes gets someone to hand out menus to those in line and has a staffer be the doorman/woman. That's the sign of a special place... you gotta wait to get in, but once you're in, don't dilly dally with the ordering.
Steph and I got four cupcakes to share. As I previously said, the key to finding a winner on a menu is to sample lots of things... So we got: Key Lime, Coconut, Chocolate Ganache, and Salted caramel. The chocolate ganache is on the regular menu, while the other three are part of the daily specials. There are also monthly specials.
The Key Lime and Coconut were our two least favorite. There was nothing special about the coconut cupcake at all. The only thing I remember about it was that it was lackluster and unimpressive. Key lime cupcake at least was lively due to it being citrus-y. However, I think perhaps the key lime flavor lends itself better to something like a Swingle.
The chocolate ganache and salted caramel cupcakes were more to our liking. Perhaps the intensity of flavor between chocolate and caramel is just much stronger than key limes and coconuts. Still, when a bakery knows that, they should create a product that would garner a raised eye brow and dilated taste buds. I'm starting to like caramel anything. This also reminds me it's been a long time since my last candy bar. Sad.
Georgetown Cupcakes is coming to New York next year, according to Eater. While the cupcakes are enjoyable, I still recommend everyone go to Sugar Sweet Sunshine for a cupcake fix. It's too hard not to love the $1.50 price tag at SSS. As the country enters year five of the recessions, it's important to keep visiting pocketbook-friendly establishments.

I wonder how they will do in NYC! They're competing with like 1000000 other cupcake shops!

@Esther,
I think they'll do well... if having a show is any indication of popularity, they should do just fine. TLC also does that show, Cake Boss, and that shop in NJ is just mobbed.
