Kelvin Slush Truck for the warmer months

The weather is beginning to change in New York. Spring is a fickle season in the city. It really is the one-night-stand of seasons here in NY. Winter drags on, but Spring is like Holly Holiday. What good do you get out of finicky weather? I reckon the thing to do is to enjoy it good days while you can. And when the day is good, you ought to get yourself something refreshing, something cool. Kelvin Slush Truck does the trick. Essentially it's like a tricked out slurpee. In 2010 they were the Best Dessert winner at the Vendy's so that tells you they're fairly legit.

That day I was there, the girl in front of me was trying to learn more about the truck. So she asked the dude in the truck, "Are you Kelvin?" The owner of the truck was kind to her and didn't bust on her for it, but just let her know that it was Kelvin, like the temperature. He must get that a lot.

I got the ginger and tea slush with guava mix-in. The medium was $4 (I think?). The flavor was more pronounced than a slurpee, and the guava mix-in was a bit subtle. Next time I would opt for a different mix-in. Maybe something stronger and perhaps more colorful for a picture. The price per ounce ratio makes Kelvin slush a special treat more than an everyday type of thing.

Today I want to jump on a quick tangent. Saw this cool site called Poverty Action - Proven Impact. Why is it cool? It's a site for charitable giving for global poverty and it's cool because they use real world tests to analyze what works. You can donate because it makes you feel better about giving kids halfway across the world some vaccinations. The difference between donating to just any program that wants to immunize kids and a program that has proven impact? 6 times the difference. That means if you just randomly picked a charity cuz it made you feel good, you could help say, 6 kids. You pick the RIGHT charity, and with the same money you could help 36 kids. DO DA MATH. Anyway, cool site, check it out.

Lastly, what do you all think about Facebook fan pages? I've been contemplating setting one up, but I don't know what good it'll do. For the most part, that 'Like' button just seems like a social counter. I remember back when geocities was where everyone set up their pages, and people would put up counters to show how many people have visited. And then for a period after that, people liked to post how many RSS subscribers they got. Now it's Facebook fans. If you prefer getting your updates via Facebook instead of RSS and checking the site, please leave a comment and let me know. I'll get around to it at some point!

  • I have refrained from Facebook for all purposes, including blogging. I feel as if it would be a repeat of information but just on a different platform. However, if you want to reach a larger (but maybe not better) audience, I hear Facebook is the way to go. It should drive the ad sales up.

  • @hungry,

Hmm... that's an interesting thought about ad sales. I don't do my own ad sales, but you're probably right to assume that marketers want to see a blog that's popular on Facebook. You also brought up the other good point about repeat information. Hmm...

  • The Kelvin truck guy is a former lawyer. I just read your more recent post...his exit strategy from law seemed to work for him, and it involves slushees from a truck! You can do it, D!
