Margon has one of the best Cuban sandwiches in NY

Continuing with the theme of Best of NYC, today let's talk about a sandwich. The one in question is actually in Midtown Manhattan. You wouldn't think that one of the best places to get a Cuban sandwich is close to Broadway and Times Square, oh but there it is. And they're actually open only until 5 PM. It's like they're mostly aiming for the guy wanting to grab Cuban food on-the-go. Getting a Cuban from Margon can be a bit tricky. The restaurant is long and narrow. When you first walk into the restaurant during lunch hour, a guy to your left asks if you want a Cuban and how many you want. Their sandwiches are so popular during lunch that the guy just wants to take your order as soon as you get in the door. If you walk farther into the restaurant, you'll find they have other options on the steam table, as well as some seats. Maybe you're into that at another time, but this first time you just want a sandwich, OK? It's $6 and you have to wait for it too.

The reason you have to wait is because they make them to order. The dude is constant cutting bread, putting some sort of sauce on the sandwiches before he toasts them on the sandwich press. The wait for the sandwich takes about ten minutes. Thankfully they got NBA TV going on in the little TV next to the counter, so it wasn't all bad waiting for the Cuban sandwich.

Definitely make sure you have some extra napkins when you start eating your Cuban. They can be a little drippy due to the mustard, mayo and I think hot sauce. The ham and the roast pork sort of blend in together when you work your way through the sandwich. It's filling and I finished mine in record time. The nice part of having Margon so close to Times Square is that you can take your lunch to the big seating area by TKTS. You can watch the crowds down below. Because the sandwich is so good and you can take it with you to go people watching, I think Margon has one of the best sandwiches you can get in Midtown.

  • I've been to Margon several times but never the sandwich. I guess I should do something about that, shouldn't I?

  • Ok, I'm totally getting that for lunch today

  • OMG.. what a greasy delicious mess of a sandwich. Good find!

  • @hungry,

    really? never gotten the sandwich? You really must give it a try! :)

    @stphn,

    aaaa yea! glad you got to try it and liked it.

  • A very convenient location, but is the sandwich really better than the Cafe Habana Cuban? (if you haven't tried it, you should)
