Beefy sandwiches at Bowery Beef

Rejoice! The Knicks are going to be semi-relevant again! News came late last night that Carmelo Anthony is getting traded to the Knickerbockers. This means that you should go out and celebrate with something that's as silky smooth as his j-train (thank you, NBA commercial). You wouldn't think beef is something that might be silky smooth, oh but you be wrong. Check your preconceived notions about roast beef at the door when you visit Bowery Beef. This version of a roast beef sandwich is an import from Bean town and definitely worthy of your taste buds because it's only $5 and only a dollar more if you add cheese.

Fork in the Road blog covered the sandwich first, and that's what alerted me to this thing. They serve the roast beef sandwich on soft hamburger buns that they butter and toast. Then with your permission, they add on some really soft roast beef on top and add mayo, horseraddish, and bbq sauce to the thing. You could ask them to exclude those toppings but why do that to yourself? The more the merrier I say. I'm not sure how much the cheese enhances the sandwich so if you don't want cheese, or if you want to save a buck, it's ok.

Sietsema mentioned it's like Arby's and actually my memory of Arby's is too faded at this point. I can tell you the roast beef sandwich goes down super easy. Not sure how they do the beef but they do it right cuz it is really soft. There's something great about soft texture that always gets to me. Whether it's in babies, puppies, or booies, it's always a good thing. And a quality you would like in your roast beef sandwich too. If there is one quibble, it's that the sandwich isn't a meal. It's really more of an appetizer. I still think you should go out and try it though.

In other news, I'm thinking of doing a weekly podcast of news that happen around the food world in New York and beyond. But man, I googled food podcasts and there's apparently a boatload of these things already out there. No matter, I want to find something new to do so let's give it a whirl. I hope to do them on Sat or Sun to recap the week. So I shoulda posted this on Sunday but it was NBA All-Star weekend so I had to watch everything.

  • why are you doing podcasts now?

  • @Ang,

it's because I have too much free time on my hand. That and I get bored with trying to squeeze out more performance from my server. haha. Gotta find something to do, I can't watch TV all day.
