Big Gay Ice Cream Truck

I tried the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck for the first time yesterday. Yes, this means that I'm behind every other NYC food blogger by a year or so. But there's one thing that I already really love about this ice cream truck. No, it's not because he serves up a cone called the Salty Pimp. Again, no, it's not because there's a cone called Bea Arthur. Wanna know? It's because he doesn't play that annoying ice cream truck music. You know the one... maybe your hood don't got ice cream trucks, but for the rest of us, that's one annoying sound in the summer. I didn't know really what to expect from the BGICT because I never really visit the Mister Softee trucks. They annoy the shit out of me so much that it's not worth it. Plus, with an ice cream maker at home... you know, it's more fun just eating in my underwear, while watching the love handles grow lovingly inch by inch. Ah... it's like I'm eternally in the first trimester. Beautiful times yo. As mentioned previously, the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck has cool sound cones, but we'll see how they taste...

bea-arthur

First up was the Bea Arthur. You can see the other cones that the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck offers on their goodies page. So the Bea Arthur is a vanilla cone with dulce de leche and crushed Nilla wafers. Since I've never seen the Golden Girls or anything else she was in, I have no idea how this relates to her. What is the truth is that this cone is awesome. Sure $4 is prolly a little more than other Mister Softee cones but this one has dulce de leche on it! I'm a fan.

salty-pimp

And then we get to the salty pimp. Is pimpalicious a word? It should be because that's what this was. It's pretty awesome to enjoy a vanilla cone drizzled with dulce de leche and then dipped in chocolate. I mean... it's pretty perfect. I think for any uninitiated person to the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck, the main thing to note is that this place is mostly about ice cream. It's also important to note that good toppings can transform soft-serve. It sounds really simple, but I experienced this in Chicago as well (and will tell y'all about it).

I really like the BGICT because of the cool toppings and the fact the dude inside the truck (Doug Quint) doesn't look as sketch as the other ice cream truck dudes that are in my hood. So in review, score a bucket for good cones, and score another bucket for friendly ice cream truck man. His location changes depending on the day/time, so refer to his twitter account at http://twitter.com/biggayicecream for up-to-the-minute info on where to get your goodies fix.

  • @lydia,

    You need to grow up. Ice cream truck music is fucking annoying. I don't care what kind of stupidass tradition you think belongs in New York. Some traditions need to change.

  • what "hood" are you from? let me guess, williamsburg?

    of course you hate the ice cream music. all hipsters do is complain about stuff that is a part of the city.

  • @FN,

    That tune does drive one kind of loopy, especially if it's in the dead heat of summer and there's no AC

    @Nicholas,

    Like you, I grew up in the suburbs. However after living in Brooklyn for six years, that tune has stopped being endearing. haha

    @Hungry,

    The thing I don't understand is how ice cream trucks still do so well... I mean, is it a city thing? Because in the burbs it doesn't seem like you could do that well.

    @James,

    You can totally get into soft serve. It doesn't feel so cheap anymore though... haha. The toppings really matter a lot...

  • How else would I know when the ice cream man is here? Also, I believe that an official Mr. Softee song that goes with their tunes.

  • I was just thinking about the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck and wondering how much I can really get into a cheap soft serve cone. Hopefully the GOBBLER will turn me around on this issue.

  • I know exactly what you mean by that annoying frigging ice cream truck tune. One time I shot at the ice cream truck with my BB gun. I'm not proud of that but the tune drives you a bit loopy.

  • Having grown up in the suburbs, the ice cream truck music is kind of endearing. Maybe if I keep listening to it though...
