Little Pie Company
After seeing Jonathan talk about Hoosier Mama, I just had to counter with a specialty pie shop in New York. A good pie week can't end without a trip to the Little Pie Company. You can't help but love the name of their store. You don't see any cupcake place call themselves something like, "Cupcake Place" or something like that. My friend Eric is a pie lover, and told me that I should try their signature pie is the sour cream apple walnut. That's by far the most interesting sounding pie I've heard of, that still has the potential of being good. But first, I had to try something more traditional, a slice of their cherry pie.
Little Pie Company has two stores in New York. One is in Grand Central, and the other is on 43rd street between 9th and 10th avenue. They have common pies like pumpkin, strawberry rhubarb, Mississippi mud, and cherry. They however, do not have any chess pie that Jonathan talked about at Hoosier Mama in Chicago.
At the ninth avenue location of Little Pie Company a slice of pie is $4 dollars. $1 dollar cheaper than pies at Momofuku Milk Bar. The cherry pie is filled with big pieces of cherries and the pie is not too sweet. This was the first real slice of pie that I had in a while and it was delicious. I wish a pie shop like this was near my neighborhood in Brooklyn.
I also picked up a mini sour cream apple walnut pie. It's a tiny pie that's probably good enough to split with two people. For $7.50, it's a pretty good deal. What sets this pie apart from other apple pies is the creaminess factor that's not in regular apple pies. Also, the apple isn't in chunks; it's sliced thinly and layered on top of each other. It's really a one-of-a-kind type of pie. The top of the pie is a thick layer of walnut crumble, the type of thing you would find on the top of a coffee cake. It's actually kind of difficult to cut through the top layer crust because the crumble layer is thick, but it's delicious. It's a nice contrast with the tart and creamy apple at the bottom of the pie.
A few people have remarked that the blog has sort of slowed down lately. I think it's mostly because it's the height of basketball season. Sure, basketball starts in the fall, but it really only matters between March and June. In March, there was March Madness. And this week, the NBA playoffs finally started. These are the sort of things that pull my attention away from photographing my food. As a result of watching more basketball, I see way more commercials on TV. Commercials like this one with Patrick Ewing and this one with Master P. Makes me crave Snicker's. It's been a while since I've actually had a regular sized Snicker's bar. Not sure if this commercial will change any of that, but funny food commercials make life better.

Their sour cream walnut apple pie is also my favorite. Try warming it in the (toaster) oven before serving.
