Peanut butter cookie from Trois Pommes
Happy New Year! That gets old after a while so this will be my official post to wish everyone well in 2009. It should be a great year full of good eats like burgers, cupcakes, pizzas, and of course, cookies. The cookie you see here is from Trois Pommes Patisserie in Park Slope Brooklyn. Sometimes people say that a certain food item was a revelation, as if it could transcend the boundaries of food and change your life. This didn't exactly happen, but I did have a revelation while I ate the cookie. It's not exactly the same, you see.
Revelation number one. Holy shit, $2.50 for ONE cookie? WTF has this world come to? Really. I remember buying Oreos at Kroger for $2.50 when I was young. And that's a WHOLE PACKAGE of Oreos that would last and last. This was one cookie that disappeared in a matter of minutes. With the country facing unemployment rates that could hit 10%, a patisserie is the last place to look for deflation. Oh well.
Revelation number two. Maybe as I get older, and my metabolism slows down, I probably should settle for the $2.50 single shot of cookie instead of the $2.50 package of cookie that could last for a week. Not sure how many calories is in the peanut butter cookie from Trois Pomme Patisserie, but it certainly has to be less than a whole package of Oreos. Consuming less calories is better for my body! Yay! It then makes me wonder, what do I do on those other days when I crave Oreos? Do I just end up eating nothing? Or do I eat more overpriced cookies?
The other day I had lunch with Jeremy and we were talking about how he ate at Blue Hill with his girlfriend. He was not a fan of Blue Hill at all, and he took a picture of a miniscule appetizer with his iphone and sent it to me mid-meal. It would seem that at Blue Hill and fancy bakeries like Trois Pommes, you're almost paying not just for enjoyment, but for the expert execution.
That's always been my problem with a bunch of blogs because price never seems to factor into the equation. I know for some people, you could say, "As long as enjoyment was had, the price doesn't matter." I've talked about this many times before, but now I'm thinking that as you get older, you care less about enjoyment the way a youngster would. Instead, you care more about enjoyment in terms of refinement.
Let's say you're an 8-years-old kid, and you get an allowance of $10 every other week. Would you pay $2.50 for one cookie because it's delicately crafted, or would you pay $2.50 for a package of cookies? Let's rephrase it like this. If you have some resources that's renewable every two weeks. Would you invest 25% of your resources into something that's to be enjoyed for 5 minutes or something else that's to be enjoyed for 5 days?
Even though 2008 is under my belt (almost quite literally), and I'm a year wiser (haha, not really), I still think like someone who is 8-years-old. The cookie from Trois Pommes was very enjoyable, the peanut butter flavor hits you head on because of the peanut butter filling in the middle. It's creamy and crunchy at the same time. It's a cookie that makes you yearn for milk the way Oreos would. I just don't think $2.50 is worth any cookie anywhere.

It all comes down to whether you value quality or quantity. Maybe you value the latter more.
By the way, that peanut butter cookie looks really good. I'd pay $2.50 for it!

Know why the French are so slim, generally speaking? Cuz the food is expensive as hell! Know why Americans are so fat, generally speaking? Cuz the food is overly cheap.
Eat the Trois Pommes cookie - actually, eat 3-4! Take this even further - vow to avoid cheap food at all costs. Then, after a few months, look in the mirror at your newly fab body.

price should ALWAYS factor into the equation unless you're filthy rich, but even if i was filthy rich, i'd still eat McDonald's (first meal of '09) and Hydrox. $2.50 for a small cookie is outrageous though.

I know what you mean on expensive bakery treats. I feel bakeries jack up prices because no matter what, most people will pay $2.50 for a cookie because it's still cheap, relatively speaking to let's say a fancy meal at a chi-chi. The first time I went to Momofuku Milk Bar, I did a double take when I saw the prices and decided to go back when I "really needed" a snack from there. Of course I went back a few days later, I thought it was worth it. Epic fail on my part.

Well, if you want really head on peanut butter taste, buy a jar of peanut butter (how much is that? I'm a little allergic to peanuts, so I don't really know the price of peanut butter). That's pretty healthy for you too and will fill you up (protein) ;P
Seriously, I wrote about Treats Truck and how the cookies are "cheap" at $1 a piece but you can get those cheapie cookies for 2/$1 - that's two PACKAGES. But for my body's sake, I just won't eat cookies anymore. Except those two boxes of Girl Scout Cookies I just ordered... lol
PS Damn, when I was 8, I think my allowance was $1.50. Cheap parents or inflation?

Dude, have you ever tried Bouchon Bakery's Nutter Butter cookie? They're almost the same but more pricier and bigger (like the size of a dessert plate).

Hmm.. maybe you are right, I do value quantity quite often. And there definitely is enjoyment to be had in the cookie, I don't want to give the wrong impression!

Actually the Momo Milk Bar cookie is decently priced at $1.75 and they're pretty hefty. It's one of the only values at that place though. Everything else is like whoa.
