Pam's Real Thai
Sometimes I fail at being a food blogger. There were some free samples at Kyotofu last week. I failed to score any free samples because I fell ill to the quiet Asian stereotype. In the store, this nice woman was like, "Can I help you?" and I was thinking, "You could if it's free!" But it just felt so Asian to ask for free food and then leave. So instead I settled with being the meek Asian and left. Life is just not fair sometimes. To cheer myself up, thai food was in order. Around the corner from Kyotofu is Pam's Real Thai.
Pam's Real Thai is kind of out of the way out at 9th ave and 49th. If it was more centrally located, they would totally kick ass. If they could replace Yum Thai that used to be by 6th ave, my life would be perfect. I mean it, it would be like Ron kissing Hermione kind of perfect. You know, perfect in an odd but long-time coming sort of way. Speaking of which, nothing better than listening to drunk folks try to name the Harry Potter movies at 2am in the morning on a bus. Good times I tell you.
At Pam's, you can get Pad kee mao for $7.10 after tax at lunch time. It's a steal if you're looking for high quality lunch in midtown. I don't know enough about Thai food to tell you what 'good' pad kee mao is supposed to taste like. But they probably beat out most crappy Thai restaurants that litter New York.
I've also had dinners at Pam's and generally come away with the impression that they do a pretty decent job with Thai food. However, I don't think they come close to a place like Pok Pok in Portland. I always feel like New York needs to step it up with ethnic foods. Ethnic restaurants in New York can and should take more chances.
It's great for people to write books and making a living. But when you see books like this, you have to wonder what's wrong with these ethnic restaurants? Why do they do things so that some dude can write a book like that? Why aren't ethnic restaurants serving more daring food in prime locations? I know you can find places like, Sripraphai in Queens, but... I want it in Manhattan! Why is it that you have to have some special code to get the delicious stuff?

Thai food is the bomb! In fact I moved to Bangkok just to ensure I was never far from it. You could say I'm up to my cahoonas in tom yum goong. OK, I'm off to Starbucks, which, sorry to say, is the best coffee available in the Kingdom.

let me get this straight. You wanted to defy the Asian stereotype so you went and paid for a mediocre Thai dish? Life is truly unfair!
Ever eat at WonDee Siam?

Speaking of out of the way Thai, I suggest you try Olieng. I'd only had it once and it was delivered, but everything tasted authentic, according to my Thai-American taste buds. I need to try another couple times before I say it's better than Sripraphai.
