Food in Mouth

baba-booey

I ate Baba Booey

I just ate Baba Booey. Might have to go run off to see my doctor and get checked for venereal diseases or something. Obviously I didn't actually eat him because I'm trying to eat healthy now. Gotta save my calories for Thanksgiving. What I did eat was the Baba Booey cupcake from Crumbs. Cupcake Takes the Cake reports that "all proceeds... will go to LIFEbeat (The Music Industry Fights AIDS)." Sounds like a good cause for a good cupcake.

Cupcake takes the cake describes the Baba Booey cupcake as, "Chocolate cake filled with peanut butter cream cheese. Covered with 1/2 chocolate cream cheese and 1/2 peanut butter cream cheese (frosted like a B&W cookie). Surrounded by mini peanut butter chips." That's pretty much what it is, and it's AWESOME. My previous experience with Crumbs have just been ok, with some hits and some misses, but always a sweet frosting. I think the flavors worked out this time because I love peanut butter and a flavored frosting beats out a frosting that's just sweet.

I am a fan of this filling your cupcake with stuff on the inside. This was a big part of the cupcakes at Cupcake Jones when I went to PDX this summer. And you know, this trend is growing on me.

As part of full disclosure, I have to tell you this cupcake was procured as part of their cupcake giveaway as reported on Midtown Lunch. And free food always tastes better in case some of you aren't familiar with this concept. This is why free food in college club meetings were so tasty when they were probably just tolerable. Probably also the same reason why stale cookies left from meetings are always woofed down in the communal kitchen/pantry area at your office.

And as the election season draw to a close, I'm very pleased with how the general election turned out. In the coming days, it'll be interesting to see how the exit polls break down for men vs women, young vs old, and all those voting patterns. Maybe those things don't jazz you up, but they do for me. One disappointment was that Prop 8 in California passed, so did similar props in AZ and FL. Although the nation was full of love and jubilation on Tuesday night, I have to wonder... what does it say about our nation when we allow a law to freely discriminate a segment of our society?

"If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer." Mr. President Elect, I fully appreciate the dreams of our fathers. Who in this country does not appreciate liberty, equality, and justice? But when we allow a democratized proposition to bastardize the ideas of this country, we are then left with nothing. Ideals that we conform to at our own leisure are not the ideals of the founding fathers.

It's like I skipped lunch and just ate a cupcake. It was sweet and memorable. Then I remember that I skipped lunch and it leaves me feeling like there's much more to savor.

  • I start the bidding at $2.50 for that there cupcake.

    Sweet regards,

  • "An obscure ballot initiative in Florida intended to end a legacy of bias against Asian-Americans was defeated Tuesday, apparently because voters incorrectly assumed it would prevent illegal immigrants from owning property. Had it passed, the initiative, known as Amendment No. 1, would have removed from the state’s Constitution language adopted in 1926 allowing the Legislature to prohibit foreigners who were barred from citizenship — Asian-Americans at the time — from owning land."-- NY Times Today

    The fight is not over. It has just begun.

  • Just FYI, two years ago LifeBeat sponsored a benefit concert featuring Beenie Man as the headliner. Beenie Man is the Jamaican rapper who had to cancel a string of shows in the US because of violently homophobic lyrics ("hang the chi-chi gal (lesbian) with a long piece of rope"). At the time, LifeBeat's board of directors (which included people like LGBT luminaries Hilary Rosen and Emil Wilbekin) couldn't for the life of them figure out why people were shocked by an AIDS charity sponsoring a Beenie Man concert. LifeBeat has been persona non grata with me ever since.

  • Yum! Peanut butter + cream cheese must be a win. And I love love love filled cupcakes too. Crumbs totally started my cupcake obsession back when I was in nyc last year.

    I am super happy about the election. Still ecstatic about Indiana turning blue but bummed about all the gay marriage and adoption bans.

  • I have to say, I find myself at Crumbs more than the other cupcakeries but probably due to location - there's one pretty close to my office. They've been solid for me - moist cake and good frosting but not overwhelming - but my heart remains with Sugar Sweet Sunshine. My bf really likes the Artie Lange - I wonder if he'll like this one.

    PS I was really shocked that Prop 8 passed. Like. Dude.

  • I just want to point out that "The Rachel Ray Diet" is an ad on your site. That's just, um, wrong.

  • @Hungry,
    But you could have had it for FREE!! I think they charge like $3.75 for that there cupcake.

    @Ang,
    Yea I saw that FL thing too. They said they thought ppl would realize what it was.

    @Stormy,
    That sounds pretty fucked up. I've heard of Beenie Man and that's disappointing. Some people just don't get it.

    @Aubrey,
    I was so surprised Indiana turned blue! That was really cool, I hafta say :)

    @Yvo,
    Totally, SSS is kind of out of the way. Maybe that's why they have cheaper rent and cheap cupcakes. Rent is a bitch.
