Lazzara and commodity prices

The economy is just crazy these days. You have prices going up all over the world. Lately it appears that all those fancy pants people who thought they were all hot shots and went to a business school? Apparently they can't run a business by themselves without letting greed over take them, and then ask for a bailout. All this news is distressing. The failing economy and soaring food prices is out of control. For my fellow eaters in midtown Manhattan, we now even have a price hike list for Midtown Lunch. It's time to add another casualty to the list of price hikes because apparently a chicken parm sandwich can cost $10 dollars now.

About three months ago, Zach wrote about Lazzara's pizza. He mentioned the freshly made chicken parmigiana sub for $8 dollars.

The bad news first, now it's a $9 dollar sub now and with tax you're looking at $9.75. Some people call expensive hamburgers fancy pants burgers. How about fancy pants chicken parm subs? When lunch is almost $10 dollars, you have high expectations.

Lazzara's give you what appears to be a foot long sandwich. The fried chicken cutlet is tucked neatly into the bread. Some places pile on the cheese and sauce and drown out the chicken. Lazzara's sauces lightly and the sub is not overwhelmed with cheese. It was easy to eat the chicken parm without making a mess and the meal was very filling.

Even though it was a filling lunch, I still wonder about whether it was worth it. At nearly $10 and with other chick parm subs that cost less, I wonder if there are other options. For me, chicken parm isn't something that has too much nuance. Maybe for some people it is, but for me, it just needs to be good enough and decently priced. Even in midtown though, I feel like there are good enough at less than $10 bucks.

I guess affording $10 sandwiches would be no problem if I could be a greedy Wall Street suit and ask the government to bail me out when I screw up. But alas, I have to save my tax money to bail out the greed of b-school graduates. So yea, maybe a cheaper chicken parm would be a good idea.

  • I can't really tell where the chicken is... No offense, but your pictures look like bread with red sauce.

  • You have a good point... it was there though, I promise. You do figure if a sandwich is $10, that it's not a bread sandwich with spaghetti sauce.
