Flushing field trip part one
She had me at hello. Well, it was more like "Come here, do you want dumplings?" But that's how you say 'hello' to me if you want me to respond. She obviously saw right through me, and I had no chance. Actually, she probably knew she had me when she realized that my rudimentary Mandarin was not good enough to politely decline ordering right away. Within thirty seconds of the initial eye-contact, the woman was next to me showing me the menu. Thirty seconds after that, I ordered twelve pork dumplings with chives. It was reminiscent of being at my aunts home where she would say (regardless of how portly I was), "You look hungry. Here. Dumplings!"
Shandong Dumplings is a little shack inside the Golden Shopping Mall in Flushing. I had forgotten to print out the SE:NY article and just had to play it by ear on my field trip to Flushing. I was apprehensive when the dumpling lady tried to sell me on the dumplings until I noticed a family of five that was heartily enjoying their meal.
Pork dumplings with chives was the order. For $4 dollars, you get 12 dumplings. Three dumplings for a dollar is definitely above market rate but it was worth it. The dumpling wrappers tasted handmade and the texture was perfect - slightly springy like they were just hand-rolled. The innards, packed with chives, were juicy and delicious. If dumplings could taste fresh, these definitely had that trait. You could easily wolf down all twelve in a matter of minutes, and have room for more. But that would leave no room for the rest of the mall...
More on my Flushing adventure later this week but if you feel like making a trip for yourself check out the article from the NY Times or the aforementioned Serious Eats: NY article for fooding ideas.

That looks really good. It might also have something to do with me starving right now too.

It was sooo delicious. I wanna make them as good. Sigh. Me need powers.
Jack,
