Chaat in midtown
A plate of vegetarian food for five dollars? Do you know everything else that I could get for five dollars?! Psssh, Taj Delhi Chat will not win me over! Those were my original reaction to the idea of having chaat for some Midtown Lunch. The pictures of the healthy and delicious looking food on Zach's blog helped to sway me. I am quite thankful because chaat is probably now my favorite summertime lunch. It is refreshing, healthy, and filling. What else could you ask for when it is so hot outside?
From the information at Midtown Lunch, I learned about the aloo chole chaat. "Aloo is potato, Chole is garbanzo beans. Chat means it is probably mixed with the same things seen in the #5 above. Tomatoes, onions, yogurt and tamarind." You could actually show me a picture of tamarind and I would just stupidly exclaim, "Hey! BROWN PEANUTS!!!" That just goes to show you how much food knowledge I possess. Major fail. Poopypants.
The best thing about the chaat is that it has a spicy kick to it. You would not expect things because all the ingredients are fresh and the whole thing is so colorful. I really liked the yogurt sauce, chickpeas, tomatoes, and red onions. Each spoonful makes you more and more content about forgoing meat for one meal. And after the last bite? I just wanted more. But I was stuck inside my cubicle and could not get more. Sad...
The menu at Taj Delhi Chat has over thirty items. Not every one is a chaat but it would still take you a while to run through all the chaat options they have. If you want something yummy and refreshing for lunch, this is it. And at $5, it is probably better for you than a street meat palooza. (note - I LOVE endless street meat, don't get me wrong here.)
I ate this for lunch because this week I have to try and be healthy since there's a basketball tournament on Saturday. One week of healthy eating probably would not change anything. Most of you probably do not know what Amateur Chinese basketball tourneys look like... basically just imagine how awkward it would be if the Governator did a remake of Bridges of Madison Country. Oh and the answer is no, I haven't seen it.
The other day I tried to watch an organized game of Asian five on five. Two kids walked up behind me, and they were like, "Oh what's this?! Asian basketball? With jerseys? And look, they have real refs! This is just like the NBA!" I wanted to turn around and tell the kids, "If you think this is like the NBA, I sure hope you never confuse Thailand with the Playboy Mansion."
