Etons
This might be a signal of what kind of a guy I am, but I love "dollar dumplings". If you frequent Chinatown, you know what's up - five dumplings for a dollar. (Crazy right?) Lately prices have gone up on those things. Places like Dumpling House and Tasty Dumpling have increased the price to four dumplings for a dollar. (Inflation = major fail!). When you are hungry for a snack, nothing is better or cheaper. But the taste is often indistinguishable from one place to another. You have to pay more for robust tasting dumplings and you can find those at Eton's in Carroll Gardens.
Lovers of dollar dumplings might gawk at Eton's prices because one order is five dumplings for $3.50 Go ahead and splurge, they are worth it. Like all good dumpling houses, Eton's makes everything from scratch and they do it in the open kitchen. When I walked in on Sunday afternoon, two people toiled away at making dumpling. They said they make a thousand of those a day. Jeebus. They have to get tired...
I tried the pork and beef dumplings, and they also have chicken and mushroom, and vegetarian. Along with variety, Eton's sets itself apart from dollar dumpling places because they cook dumplings to order. If you visit Dumpling House, you see that dumplings are made in a HUGE batch of 50+ dumplings because the demand is crazy for the after-school crowd. Eton's cooks your dumplings five at a time, and they arrive to you with the wrappers unscathed. Dollar dumpling places often suffer from this issue. I HATE holes in my dumpling wrappers because the juice drips out. Sometimes the juice drips out into the cooking vessel so you do not even get the juice back. Here? No holes. Me likey.
The pork and beef dumpling has great flavor because of the beef. It does not taste like any dumpling you have had before at dollar dumpling places because they only use pork. The beefier taste makes the dumpling seem like a meatball with a thin wrapper around it. If you are more familiar with meatballs than you are with dumplings, these will please you. If you are a normal dumpling lover, this is also worth a try.
I should try to get used to adult prices for food. When you frequent dumpling places, especially dollar dumpling places, you start to notice a few things. My friend Jeremy mentioned the other day, "You know, we're always the two oldest guys in here and we're always eating with high schoolers. We are two cheap mofos."

They look delicious. I love dumplings...in soup, in sauce, plain, fried, raw...ok, maybe not raw ;) You're right, it is so essential that there are no holes in the dumplings, they are so much better juicy (and hot!).
