Big Apple BBQ 2008
Sometimes your life contains this huge void, and all you can do is fill it with good bbq. What do you know?! The Big Apple BBQ is this weekend! It is basically a big barbeque festival in the middle of Manhattan. For some reason it just so happen that this weekend is the first weekend for 90 plus weather. Man, it was hot outside... I braved the heat and skin cancer and went out looking for some cue...
First stop was The Pit by Ed Mitchell and he hails from North Carolina. On the menu was whole hog and cole slaw. Mmmmm... I got there early and stood in line and baked in the sun for about thirty minutes. The sandwich was really delicious and if he opened a restaurant up here in NY, I would totally visit. Smokey and porky... every bite triggered the next. I practically swallowed the entire sandwich. The problem is that I hate lines and thirty minutes in 90 plus degree heat really dampened my enthusiasm for food. You might ask, "Hey retard, go eat in the shade!" Ah.. but young grashoppa, EVERY line at every station is at least 30 minutes long. If I spend time eating in the shade, then I would lose out on valuable time!
Big Bob Gibson was next up, and they had some pulled pork on the menu. This line was also over thirty minutes. Once again, very delicious pulled pork that I loved but... wow it was hot today. That was all I could think about. The heat kind of screwed with my mind a little, perhaps more water was in order... After two rounds of pork I still wanted more but some of the lines just looked crazy. I gave up on meat and stopped by Tabla for some Indian mango. NY Mag really made this out to be like a life changing mango. Verdict? It was sweet and ripe, and while it tasted a little different than other types of mangoes, I probably would not shell out top dollars for it at a grocery store.
I think the Big Apple BBQ is great fun if you go with friends and go early. Then split up at different places and get two or three plates at each place, regroup, and share. If you go by yourself, you will just feel lost and heat fatigue and then have you hit those Snapple stands repeatedly to drink the free samples like a thirsty dog. Speaking of dogs... a doggy picture because what is a weekend post at Food in Mouth without a doggy picture? Right??

Out of curiousity, how much was that mango? I adore alphonsos and have been buying them for 4 pounds a box of 6.
Mmmmm....now to find some pork sandwiches...

I thought about going early today, or maybe going early tomorrow, but can't bear the thought of standing in line in this weather.

You went?! I gone there yesterday (early, too!) and had the same things except I went with a friend so she got Big Bob Gibson's...
In reply to Su-Lin, they're $1 each slice. It's awesome.

Su-Lin,
Well it was a mango slice and not a whole mango. On Saturday it was $1 and on Sunday they decided to double the price to $2. It was RIDICULOUS.
Ang,
It really was too hot but the weather was better on Sunday than on Saturday.
Tina,
Yea I went Saturday AND Sunday. :P The mangos really pissed me off on Sunday. How is $2 on Sunday and $1 on Saturday? Floyd Cardoz and Danny Meyer!!! AHHHHH!!!!

It's even better when the friends throw in for a fast pass and share. Being early did help a lot, but, as you saw, by mid-afternoon I was overheated, tired, filled with BBQ, and napping under trees.

Ah yes... but napping after BBQ is the way to go. :)
