Habana Outpost
Cuban sandwiches are one of those things that always makes me happy. It is really difficult to screw up a cuban because the only thing that can make it bad is if it is overly dry. If you use too much bread or if the pork is insanely dry, then it would not be a good sandwich. Last week I stopped by Habana Outpost in Ft. Greene and I was greeted with an imperfect Cuban Sandwich experience.
Habana Outpost features outdoor and indoor seating, and that particular Saturday, the sun was out and the outdoor seating area was pretty full. After I handed the woman my ticket, she said that the wait was around 30 to 45 minutes. Saturday! 2pm! Goodness, I did not think that kind of wait was possible in Brooklyn. This was a good sign, since why would all those other people want to wait for bad food?
There was a serious flaw with their ticketing system because it had no numbers on it. All they did was print your name. When you hand the expediter your ticket, he/she gathers them up until there are a bunch, then hands them to the cooks. When I was there, she did not keep track of which ticket came first.
Around the time when my food was supposed to be ready, three or four parties came up to the expediter to let her know that they had been waiting for too long and they would like to leave. She tried to assuage their nerves, but it was kind of pointless. She would ask the kitchen about a ticket for Bob or some other person, and the kitchen would inform her that they will get to it soon. The system is chaotic, but it was only the second weekend of the summer season.
Onto the sandwich... The meat was tasty and not overly dry. They also added some orange-ish mayo looking sauce that was tasty, but I also added some hot sauce on top. I only had two minor problems with the sandwich. First I wanted them to press it longer and make the outside bread crust to be more toasted. Second, the cheese on the inside of the sandwich was not melted. Come on!! Melt the cheese!
I would definitely get this sandwich again if I am ever in the Ft. Greene area. They also have other items that looked really delicious like their "Famous Corn" or the chicken diablo sandwich. When the weather is nice and you want to enjoy the sun, Habana Outpost is a great destination.

It looks good and makes me want one, even if you say it was bad!
