Dawat and really random things

Yes this post has pictures of Indian food but hold on a second. Any of you out there drink Ovaltine or Milo or Horlicks? Up until a few days ago I had never tried any one of these things, which are all listed under 'malted milk' at Wikipedia. I bring this up because I can barely taste a difference between Milo and Ovaltine. And in general, those three drinks do not move me in any shape way or form. Basically to me, malted milk is like Ron Paul, slightly interesting, but not robust enough to make me change my drink. Oh right, and a few weeks ago I had some Indian food at Dawat.

samosas dipping-sauces

I went during the last day of Restaurant Week and basically their dinner prices are not that much more expensive than the RW prices if you want to skip the dessert. Indian desserts are also like Ron Paul, therefore the regular menu won out. (For dessert I prefer something like cake or pie). The bread basket is this flat cracker-ish thing that comes with three sauces/marmalades. As you can tell, I am super well versed in Indian cuisine, hence all the detailed names. If you prefer hearty breads then this would not really work for you because the focus is on the sauces.

naan innards-naan

Dawat has a few different types of naan. There is this one called keema naan which has bits of lamb on the inside. I had no idea how it would taste, but it was a pleasant surprise. It was not too lamby, but it definitely provided a more robust flavor than their regular naan (also very delicious).

chicken

Entrees of lamb vindaloo and chicken biryani turned out to be a complicated combo since both provided intense heat. I felt like Justice slammed me to the ground super hard. Pain. Overall I thought Dawat was interesting and satisfying but there are other Indian places like Tabla or Devi that I want to try out.

Anyway, to close this wonderfully random post... I am curious if anyone out there use twitter, imeem, or going.com. The wide world of social networking is baffles me and quite frankly I do not know up from down. The only thing I know is if you want free music there is a thing called, FreeMusicZilla which lets you raise your middle finger to the RIAA and stuff. And since this post cannot possibly be more disjointed, I leave you with the video from the new macbook air commercials, by Yael Naim - New Soul.

  • Eeek! Ovaltine, Milo and Horlicks are so different. What did you grow up drinking?

Oh yeah, the food looks good. But back to Ovaltine! :p

  • ...with three sauces/marmalades :))

I love indian food. Samosas, lamb korma and tikka masala. Really great food !

The first time I heard Yael Naim was on the original soundtrack of Eli Chouraqui’s film 'Harrison’s Flowers' in 2000. And she is a french-israeli singer , Houhou ! Good choice of music :)

  • Oh my GOD, I am so insulted that you don't know anything about Indian food.

  • Agnes,
I grew up drinking... water? soy milk? I do not know!? Horlicks tastes way different, I agree. But the maltiness of Ovaltine just does not come across that well for me, and supposedly that is the main difference between that and Milo? My friends tell me the tag line of this blog should be 'it all tastes the same to me'. haha

    Deli,
Ohh.. korma, that stuff is delicious too. And tikka masala! And I am glad you like the choice of music! :)

    Anon,
That is how I roll, with insults and stuff. You know how I do.
