Sun yip or ho yip or fun hos

Welcome to another installment of the most irrelevant food blog ever. I say that not because it is true, but because half of this blog has nothing to do with food at all. Sure, in the upcoming paragraphs there will be some details about Ho Yip or is it Sun Yip? I just love a good naming crisis, sometimes I have them too, but that is another story for another time. Just as a warning to those who get bored easily, the next paragraph will be non-food related, skip it if you want.

This past Saturday night it was four Chinese dudes and mudblood chick sitting in a living room watching The Nanny Diaries. (There is a punchline in there somewhere...) There was a scene where someone was reading to the kid and Patrick says,

"My parents never read to me? I wuz robbed!" [paraphrased]

"Both my parents worked and I was raised in front of the television." said Ming

"I was raised in front of a Nintendo" replied Pat.

Somewhere in all of this our combo friend, Jere-Ann made a comment but I forgot. And I do not know the term when your friends become like Brangelina and you have to combo their name. And we also figured out that I have no idea who Little bo Peep is. What kind of childhoods did we have?! Maybe I will just talk about the food.

And you know what, I have a fondness for combos and that is why I like this Sun Yip or Ho Yip naming. I am just going to call this restaurant SunHo Yip. It is a shame one of the signs does not say Fun Yip, then the combo name could be Fun Ho. Who does not love a fun ho? Right? Ok, the food. Sun Ho Yip offers two distinct options for lunch, one is the buffet line and the other is the steam table/kitchen order line in the back. The buffet is okay the few times that I have tried it. It appeals to the mass audience and if you like typical take-out food done well, it is a good choice. The back of the restaurant has options that would appeal to those who prefer a more traditional option.

On Fridays the special is usually Fish and Bean Thread. Another special is Stewed Beef and turnips. Both are pretty good but I am more of a fan of the Fish special. It is a bit difficult to describe or explain "bean thread", but that is the name they posted. Basically it is a soy product with a texture that has much more bite than tofu. The fish comes in chunks that are first fried and then either stewed or stir fried with the bean thread. Meaty and delicious, this dish is packed with yummy proteins.

bak-choy chicken

If you go on other days they might just have specials like Chicken with Bak Choy in garlic sauce or something. I tried that and it was decent, but not as good as the fish and bean thread. It tastes better than your average take-out fare, and it is not overly sauced but I still say this place is better on Fridays when they have the specials. As for their naming crisis, I say just keep it going, it does not seem to make a difference what they are called.

And as for my friends, we still have not settled on the combo name that sticks. We still need one that screams all your names are belong to us. We started with Jere-Ann but when we use other parts of their name we end up with Marimy. Funny enough, phonetically it sounds like "Marry-Me"....

  • how is it you have a food blog and live in park slope but havent posted on los pollitos yet

  • come on now, it's just chicken.

no but actually the main reason is that the lighting in there is more suited for couples than for someone who wants to take pictures for a food blog.

  • These specials sound delicious. Will have to move our schedule for NY trip up ...

Childhood memories ... hmm ... it appears that the most pampered children are not necessarily the most successful ... But, define success ...

Ok, side tracked ... back to food And Happy Chinese new Year!

  • Thanks! Happy Chinese New Year to you too!

  • Yo, Danny this is Vic this dish

  • Went to Ho Yip to try this Friday special recently. It was good, but I'd prefer it if the "Bean Thread" aka Deep Fried Dried Tofu Skin was not deep fried first. Overall, the dish was incredibly yummy and affordable ($6 tax incl.), albeit a tiny bit salty.
