Food in Mouth

Menchanko Tei

I was supposed to be writing about ramen from Menchanko Tei, except the Knicks were in the middle of pursuing a three-game winning streak, and in the middle of a commercial break, I got sucked into watching Gossip Girl for fifteen minutes. Yea, fifteen whole minutes where the pretty protagonist was getting sloshed at a bar and then a Smarmy McCreepster tries to pull an unsmooth move as he lured her into the kitchen for a grilled cheese with truffle oil. (See, there was food involved). I want my fifteen minutes back. Oh if they could just invent something that lets you reclaim wasted time...

The Menchanko ramen comes with a miso broth, two shrimps, a couple pieces of chicken, a salmon ball, rice cake, and some vegetables. The only odd thing in that mix was the rice cake because it was super soft and sticky, which was a complete contrast in texture with the ramen. In whole, I was only mildly impressed with the toppings they included with the ramen. Compared with Sapporo, the noodles at Menchanko seems slightly thicker and more satisfying as far as ramen goes.

At $8.95, it was a fairly satisfying bowl of noodles, and I definitely would revisit it again in the future. The next time I would probably try the ramen with the spicy miso broth instead. I tried that once at their other location but that was a long time ago. One weird thing they did with the bill was that they added tip for me, which was fine but who adds tip for a person dining solo? Anyway, there is supposed to be a crazy cold front coming in this weekend, maybe there will be more ramen consumption, or maybe I should stay in and cook something for a change. hmmm...

  • did you go to the one in the east village or the one in midtown?

  • I think I like the Sapporo ramen better. We should go this weekend.

  • Ang,
I went to the one in midtown. I got to sit at the bar area, it's pretty nice really. They are right next to some other Japanese joint and I almost walked into that one, but the prices scared me off.

    chiu08,
Hmm... the noodles themselves are pretty good at Menchanko. Even though the corn is kind of weird at Sapporo, I have to say I like that one better too. And you should change your campaign slogan to something like 'Rock out!'
