Congee Village
Happy New Year! I have some of the same resolutions as many other individuals: eat better, live healthier, lose weight, be a better person, blah blah blah. You know, stuff. Somehow that impetus morphs like a caterpillar by the time November rolls around. Instead of losing weight, you get new pants. Same idea, right? In 2008 my resolutions will be simple - eat more of everything. Of course I will do the other stuff, be meaner, be less polite, be more misogynistic, and be the best a-hole that I can be. In the spirit of eating better, maybe I will just talk about the food for now.
Congee Village actually has two locations, but the food is the exact same no matter which location you eat at. Of course their specialty is congee; I have only tried three kinds: pork with preserved eggs, sliced fish with preserved eggs and chicken with black mushrooms. They have something like thirty different variations. Congee comes to you in little clay pots, and they are pretty yum. I really do not know if there are people in this world who specialize in tasting porridge, but dude, it is porridge. I think there are three classifications for porridge: too hot, too cold, and just right. No wait, what am I talking about? Ok maybe it is more like: bad, passable, and good.
We also got some pork chops, and I do not remember what kind they were. Maybe Peking style pork chops? It looks like that from the picture. The vegetables were sauteed pea shoots with garlic. I happen to think pea shoots beat bak choy hands down, when you do a prepare it like that. Get that down, pea shoots is the move, along with congee that tastes just right.
Every January, I see these folks at the gym, these resolutioners. And they are always real motivated and they work hard. Every February, the resolutioners disappear. You know, sometimes they come back around April or May just before the swimsuit season but mostly they just come for one month out of the year. I kind of see weigh gain as this inevitable thing that occurs, and going to the gym regularly is simply to slow the process down. Did I gain weight last year? Yup. Is it ever coming off? Nope. Will I have to buy new pants? Yup. And that is all the New Years Resolution I will have for now. Time to watch some bowl games...

Haha, I like your New Year's resolution.
I need to learn to make congee this year. I suppose it's not actually that hard, but I miss my mum's congee and I'm worried that mine won't be as good!

Agnes,
Yea, congee looks easy to make, but I wonder if there is a trick to it or something. At the very least, it is not something you can overcook, right? And I somehow can never make anything as good as mom's...
J hsu,
Ron Paul is not going to win anything... so much for nobu.
