Slices of heaven at Franny's
About a month ago, Frank Bruni of The New York Times reviewed Franny's of Park Slope, and gave it two stars. Then Ed Levine of Serious Eats backed up Bruni and defended Franny's stars. Well, I had to go see what the fuss was all about since this was so close to home.
The pizza I eat most often is probably Dominoes, because they are close and they deliver. And they have the 5-5-5 deal which is great value. Sure, some people cannot ingest Dominoes, but generally I don't wind myself up that tight; it makes life a lot easier to enjoy. (But that dessert pizza looks kinda sketchy).
Franny's serves good pizza. There are detractors that say a two-star restaurant should be a certain way, or offer certain types of food, but I say phooey. Any type of restaurant can be worthy of two stars, and Franny's clam pizza is mighty delicious. The meal was kicked off by a kale appetizer that had a nice kick to it. Generally I am not a cheese + vegetable type of person but the cheese they grated on top of the kale didn't get in the way.
In addition to the pizza, I also got this pasta dish. The pasta dish was called, "Linguine with Butter and Bottarga di Muggine" and even though the waitress was nice enough to explain what the dish was, I still had no idea what it was. That's when google came to the rescue, apparently Bottarga di Muggine = Dried mullet roe. Who knew. It tasted slightly of-the-ocean, which meant that it reminded me of fish, in a good way. Over all though, that pasta dish was just okay.
Then the pizza came. It looked impressive when they brought it out. You could see the air bubbles that poofed up on the dough and the clams that were scattered around on the pizza. The pie crust had the right amount of chewiness and flavor to it, and it was just right.
