Food in Mouth

swingle-bite

My once a year Swingle

Some things you just eat once a year, but you seemingly eat it every year. I actually can't think of many things that are like that, since if I see a food that is affordable, delicious and easily obtainably year round, I'm gonna buy it. So three out of the last four years I've been to the Atlantic Antic Street Fair and I want to make it a tradition to always have a swingle. The reason I don't eat this all the time is simple. The shop that makes it, Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pies is in Red Hook and I'm lazy. The second reason is that it's $5 dollars. I love this awesome food item enough to eat it when I pass by it, but not enough to trek out to the store and buy it there. So once a year, I eat it at the Antic.

You might be wondering what exactly is a Swingle though? Well it's a key lime tart that's dipped in dark chocolate and then frozen and then put on a stick. Very very cool. The novelty of it appeals to me. Perhaps there are better key lime pies out there in the city but I like to pretend that's not the case. If you do know about a good one though, I'll be very glad to go investigate. Desserts are usually a bit pricey in this city so the five dollar price tag seems about normal.

Lastly, since the fall season is going full blast now, I thought it'd be good to share this link from the NYTimes about how gargling with a saline solution can help your cold symptoms. You can never been too careful once the flu season starts

  • @hungry,

Do it! It's worth your time, but I don't know if it's easy for you to make it out to their shop in the Red Hook area. If so, definitely try it out!

  • @JJR,

The Neti Pot thing does work wonders when you have a sinus infection during the cold/flu season. It feels like a life safer sometimes but since there is no actual cure for the common cold, a lot of it might just be the placebo effect. I feel ok with that though, haha

  • I've been meaning to try these. But just like you, I'm lazy. Maybe it's about time.

  • You know, I've heard about these things... and I've never had one personally. Seeing people write about them makes me feel like there's a void in my life, as if I'm just a little bit less alive because of never having experienced it.

    That shit sounds incredible lol.

  • @Nicholas,

You've got to try one! I think you need to drink something not sweet with a treat like this. So coke wouldn't work so well. Maybe beer or milk. Because you know, those things are interchangeable.

  • This sounds delicious! I'm sorry I missed the Atlantic Antic. :-( Cadbury cream eggs are my one-a-year food. Not because they're good, but because they're ridiculous.

On gargling: my husband has become of a fan of the Neti Pot, which is where you use a little teapot type thing--or a squirt bottle--to basically pour saline up one nostril and out the other. Apparently this works wonders, but I haven't been desperate enough to try it yet.
