Food in Mouth

seaweed

Eating beef noodle soup and seaweed at home

Eating at home is great because it usually involves eating things that I wouldn't be able to eat elsewhere. Sometimes it's just as simple as eating something that we buy at the store and just put it on plates at home. Or buying fish at the Japanese store and eating sashimi at home. Those are easy things that are do-able in my own apartment, but somehow I never do it. Instead of doing things that are convenient, I end up making ice cream at midnight, and having to go to the store just to get some milk because I ran out. Yea... gotta work on that little thing. Mental note - do easy things for meals, and don't make ice cream an hour before bed. An example of something easy that I would eat at home with my parents is cooked seaweed. Yea, that's right, I eat seaweed and it's great.

tofu

Wikipedia tells me that "seaweeds are extensively used as food by coastal people." I'm a coastal person, this is so exciting. I'm not sure how mom makes this but it's braised in some sort of soy based sauce/liquid. After it's finished cooking, it goes in the fridge. When we're ready to get our sea otter on, mom takes the seaweed out of the fridge, cuts it up into slivers (or chiffonades that shit), and addes some thick soy sauce and sesame oil. I think seaweed has a very bland taste unless you add a bunch of stuff to it, but it's got great texture.

Another simple thing that I ate at home was this tofu thing Mom bought at the store. It's almost as if they put tofu into kimchi marinade... I have no idea what this is. It's very addictive if you like spicy food. Basically it's firm tofu that's slathered in the some sort of kimchi sauce. They go down easily and it's quite possible to eat half a pound of this stuff and not realize it.

niu-lo-mein

For dinner that night we had some beef noodle soup. It was homemade and pretty damn delicious. Noodles aren't as exciting as seaweed or spicy tofu, but it hits the spot. Usually I have to find a Lan zhou noodle place to get my niu rou mein fix, but at home it's right there. It's much better than eating the instant noodles version, which is what I've been eating in my own apartment. Now if I could just get off of my lazy ass and learn how to make this...

  • I love roasted seaweed with rice :)

The tofu thing is marinated tofu. It contains no kimchi sauce. Here's a recipe from my mom:
