NYCCravings Food Truck
There's a new food truck! Yesterday Steph and I came upon a new food truck on Astor Place. It's not the usual Dessert Truck that's parked by Astor Place. This new truck had no clear signage or markings on the outside. It was just a plain looking yellow truck. I thought perhaps it would be another dessert truck, or maybe the actual dessert truck got a new paint job. It was a joy to be wrong... instead of dessert, it's actually a Chinese food truck! They're called NYC Cravings and they only serve two food items. One is Chinese fried chicken with pork sauce. The other item is dumplings.
Apparently this NYC Cravings has only been in operation for one week. One week! I love it, more and more food trucks in the culinary landscape of New York. The guy in the truck was kind enough to offer up a sample of their signature dish. Basically if you like the pork sauce you get when you get pork chop on rice, then you'll love this stuff. Actually it kind of reminds me of chicken leg on rice at Excellent Pork Chop House. Except this is from a truck... which makes it better.
The NYC Cravings fried chicken with rice will set you back $6 dollars which is pretty reasonable since it's about $5 in Chinatown. They also have dumplings, which they sell 4 for $3 dollars. They ran out of this yesterday and I didn't get a chance to try this. But just based on the price point, I can tell you that even if they're good dumplings, it's 99.99% likely that I would never buy it. While the fried chicken with rice is similarly priced to Chinatown, the dumplings is priced more like Rickshaw Dumplings. And homey don't play that. I'll get my dumplings for the awesome price in Chinatown, thank you.
You can't win them all and even if this truck just serves one dish, I would love it. You just don't see Chinese food trucks. You see food carts in Chinatown, but this is the first bona fide Chinese food truck. I feel like NYC Cravings will be a great addition to the food truck scene in New York. Now if they would just park in Midtown during the day...

I stopped by on the way home on Tuesday and they nicely forced a huge sample on me (had dinner plans). It was delicious and reminds me of my mom's cooking. I can't tell if the pork sauce you tried is the same as the one I tried. Mine had bits of preserved 'suan tsai' (literally translated to sour vegetables) which contributed to the Taiwanese flavor. This truck is a very welcome addition to the area!

@Irene,
Ah yes, I saw the 'suan tsai' on the picture on their site, but maybe they just didn't add much to my sample. It's pretty authentic and good. And you're right, quite a welcome addition!
