Thanksgiving 2008 part 2

Mothers know best. I came home for Thanksgiving yesterday and my mom told me that she went to the dictionary to look up my new favorite word and the English-Chinese dictionary had nothing. Apparently 'motherfucker' is not in the translation dictionary. Epic fail for the dictionary. I guess my language gets out of hand sometimes. Besides hearing about epic weight gain and how I look 35 now, the other thing I like to do at home is eat. Thanksgiving at home is usually a quiet affair with some good Chinese food. This year was no different. What you see above is my first plate of Thanksgiving goodness. Mmmm... that's right people, no mashed potatoes, no mac and cheese, no stuffing. Instead we had shrimp, asparagus, eggplant, soy product, squash and mushrooms, and soup. Oh and there were some desserts as well, but I'll get to that in a different post.

The main part of the dinner was the smoked turkey that mom bought. Super easy because all you have to do is heat it up in the oven and then carve that bird. No need to worry about brining or how long to cook it. Hell, it's cooked when you buy it. You're just heating that thing up. There were a couple of different dishes that were new to me. There was this soy thing that I just had never seen before. It was spongy in texture. You could see the little holes in each piece just like a sponge. Another dish that my mom came up with was this zucchini and carrots dish with thai basil and some sort of wood ear mushrooms.

The best part about the meal were these shredded shrimps. Basically you wrap them up in lettuce and eat it like a taco. So it was a shrimp taco with a lettuce shell. I must have eaten half of that plate all by myself. To finish off the meal, there was also some soup with meatballs.

Every time I come home, I always gain five pounds in a matter of a few days. This trip is no exception. When my aunt, uncle, and cousin came over, they also brought with them some desserts. So there's also that to show you, and some stuff that my mom made herself. Ah... so much food, so little time.

  • This totally reminds me of my childhood! We were never interested in roasted turkey so we'd have a huge steamboat/hotpot for Christmas! And it's good since it's cold outside too.

  • OMFG--those shredded shrimp look yummy--they're dainty, but I'm packed a punch....happy belated t-giving!

  • Sorry, meant to write "I'm sure packed a punch..."

  • There's nothing quite like a meal that your mum makes! The shrimp look so good.

  • where is the part 1

  • Yeah, where is part 1! Mmm...I lurvs eggplant -=D

  • I don't remember childhood Thanksgivings anymore except Chinese sausage sticky rice stuffing in the turkey.

  • @Su-lin,
    Mmmm... hot pot. That's also something I love about the winter time. Thanks for reminding me!

    @Dani,
    You're right, they sure did pack a punch. I could eat those things everyday. Mmm...

    @Agnes,
    Yes! There's really nothing like a home-cooked meal by mom. Nothing like getting fat around Thanksgiving either!

    @Chicago,
    Part 1 was actually Thanksgiving that I had here in New York.

    @Wonders,
    Mmm... I lurvs eggplant too :) There are actually people who don't like it... they're weird

    @Yvo,
    Ooooh, sticky rice and Chinese sausage stuffing. I've tried that once before. Turkey juice and sticky rice is really good together...

  • That shrimp dish looks amazing! What kind of seasoning / is there anything else mixed in?

  • The shripm dish - ginger, green onion, salt, a little bit curry powder, a little bit paprika.

  • Your mom must be a good cook, everything looks awesome. And it's so cute your mom reads your blog. I think my mom stopped reading my blog. I may have to spice it up with some foul language. ;)
