Iowa caucus and food
You are wondering, why is there a picture of Hilary Clinton with a picture of Starbucks? Since the Iowa Caucus is today, I want to relate the Democratic front-runners with a food brand. Why not also do the Republicans? Creative fatigue - I could not come up with stuff for the top five guys in the R party. Maybe by the New Hampshire primaries, new ideas would strike my fancy. If you follow politics closely you would notice that someone notable like Bill Richardson is left out, well that is because he has a snowballs chance in hell of being the Democratic nominee in 2008. I would give you better odds for Mario Batali joining Jenny Craig and losing two bills. Not happening. So why Hilary and Starbucks?
Let us consider the facts here. Hilary is very popular amongst Democrat voters just like Starbucks is amongst coffee drinkers. You either swear by it or swear at it. Hilary Clinton is polarizing in a way that no other candidate is in the race by either party. I am not exactly sure why, maybe it is because of Bill or maybe it is because she is a woman. Starbucks also invites love or hate, depending on who you are. Yea sure a lot of people love it, line up for it in the mornings, but there are also an undercurrent of those who simply despise Starbucks coffee. In the New York food scene, you also have staunch supporters of mom and pops coffee houses.
Now onto Barak Obama. He is a newcomer to the scene. He is fresh, invigorating, and energetic. The knock on Obama is probably that he is only a junior senator, and he has not be in the political arena for a long time. He seems to have taken the Democratic party by storm in the past three or four years. The same can be said about Jamba Juice. I still remember back in the days when Smoothie Kings were cropping up here and there. Now? Smoothie what? Jamba and Barak both have stormed onto the scene and are legit contenders for the people's love. And if you have any doubts about his popularity? Just ask Oprah, maybe you have heard of her.
Last but not least, we have John Edwards. He is the former senator from North Carolina. His appeal is that he is a down-home Southern boy (think Billy C) and he is your everyman. He works hard to get the support of the unions. No frills, and all about the homey-ness, he is your Little Debbie snackcakes. I love Little Debbie snacks, they used to give one as part of a nutritious lunch in the public schools. Pizza day used to coincide with Oatmeal Cream Pie and you would have pizza loving kids trading with sweets loving kids. It was bizarre. The thing with Little Debbie snackcakes is that they are studded with unhealthy fats. Read the label, you might be surprised... or maybe you would not, because you do not eat these things. Both Little Debbie snacks and John Edwards have small pockets of loyal followers, but can either sweep the nation up in its charms?

I think Edwards is neither womanly nor full of fat. But like the appeal of LD snack cakes, it looks like his popularity is wanning.
