Blogging crisis and eating cheaply

I'm having a mid-blog crisis. No it's not due to the fact that I have early signs of male-pattern baldness. Which... no comment. Or that when I wear a tight shirt my stomach puffs out more than my chest... but lately it's starting to bug me that my blog has no niche. It really doesn't. It's a hobby that has turned into a lifestyle that probably would be banned in the deep South or Arizona. But here I am, week after week, with seemingly no rhyme or reason to my eating madness. Rest assured it is a madness. Just a week ago, I ate lunch five times or it felt like five times. Jonathan, Grace, and Steph could all attest to that! There's a few things in life where you wanna do it five times, and eating is definitely one of them. I'll let you figure out what the other ones are... Getting back to the crisis... so when I'm feeling a crisis, naturally I eat my way out of it. Yeaaaaaa, buddy! There's no better way than to (cheaply) eat your way out of such a feeling because if you're eating truffles, caviar, and foie gras, then you probably can't eat as much. So let's talk about a couple of things that just cost a couple of bucks.

What you see at the very top of this post is some Italian ice from Uncle Louie G's in Brooklyn. They're a mini-chain and have a few locations. That particular one was from the one on Union Street and 5th avenue in Park Slope. The flavor was cherry, and I think it was $2 or $3 dollars. It tasted like artificial cherries. Not sure exactly how one comes up with an artificial cherry, but that thing was the classic case of something tasting like it didn't come from mother nature. Still, it's cheap Italian ice so I have little complaints if it's hotter than hell outside.

And then what we have are dumplings! Two dollars worth of dumplings from Prosperity Dumplings. The last few times I've been to Prosperity, it feels like they stopped watering down their hot sauce as much. Sriracha needs to really burn for it to be good. Still the king of the dollar dumpling places, I like that Prosperity has kept the prices at $1 for five dumplings. It'll be interesting to see how long they hold out to keep the prices stable. They already upped the hot and sour soup price to $1.25, so it's only a matter of time for the dumplings... unless they go the McDonald's route and start making them way smaller.

One last thing, I saw this great story on New York Times about how we're all trying too hard to multitask and that it's having a detrimental effect on human interactions. I'm totally one of those people. I wonder if technology keeps our brains from focusing on one thing at a time, and that makes it harder to enjoy food. If my brain is thirsting for information, does it make it more difficult to concentrate on one type of food or a simpler flavor profile? Am I constantly reaching for hot sauce (yes) because I can't taste the goat cheese? There's lots of questions in life, but I'm having a blog crisis and it's time to procrastinate on twitter.

  • Danny, like you, I don't really have a niche. Yeah, I ate some fine dining stuff, go to food events, etc., but really, I don't have one. (Unless you count pretty photos.) And I've been doing this for 4 years!

Honestly, do what you like. It's your blog.

  • @Nicholas,

You're right, dumplings go a long way to make things better!

  • @Victoria,

Oh yea, the 2 Bro's pizza. That place is alright. I've had it on the run before. It's not the best like you said, but for a dollar... pretty amazing.

  • Who needs a niche when you're doing a greater good for society by pointing everyone towards cheap dumplings!?!?

  • Another option for eating cheaply: dollar pizza on St. Marks. Not particularly good pizza, but very hard to beat in price
