Pepsi Throwback tastes like regular Pepsi
You know, the thing that gets me the most about brand preferences is that sometimes I just can't tell. The first time I drank RC Cola was in front of a K-Mart in Ohio. It was dirt cheap, like 25 cents or something like that. Back then, they hadn't even invented the 20oz vending machines and only had the 12oz cans. 25 cents was cheap compared to Coke or Pepsi. It just didn't taste the same. I couldn't tell you why, maybe it was the RC logo, but it just felt cheap. There was a point in my life when I could distinguish the difference between Coke and Pepsi but now that I don't have any brand loyalty, it's becoming more and more difficult to tell them apart. Now they have Pepsi Throwback, which is Pepsi made with real sugar. I still can't tell.
After I mentioned Pepsi Throwback on the fried chicken post, I kept searching for this mystical drink. During lunch break I would visit bodegas, but no luck. Then this weekend I was inside of Target searching for junk food to eat for the Lakers vs. Rockets game. A huge Pepsi display was next to the Wheat Thins and boom! Pepsi Throwback! The 12 can pack was more than I needed, but I took it anyway because this is a limited time only type of product.
It's just as refreshing as Passover Coke. I think it might be one of those things where if you drink Pepsi or Coke really often, then you can taste the difference. But if you don't drink it that often, you might not know the minor differences between the two. This is not to mention that most of the time when you drink something, you're probably preoccupied with something else. Maybe you're munching on some chips, eating dinner, watching a movie, or watching sports on TV. Your mind is just not focused on the minute differences of corn syrup vs. sugar. Maybe my taste buds are dead, who know. Maybe everyone else can tell. But for my time and money, it doesn't matter which one. Just take the one that's convenient for you. If you happen to have a store stocked with Pepsi Throwback, then great. Otherwise don't go out of your way to every bodega in your vicinity just to find one.
Oh and hope all the mothers out there had a happy Mother's Day in 2009!

For both coke and pepsi, I think the real sugar version tastes flatter, especially when not chilled on ice. Also, the times when I drank it just to see how it tastes, it tasted flatter than when I drank it as part of a meal... Part of me thinks that beyond corn being 2% cheaper, maybe the HFCS helps the fizziness. Who knows? Everyone loves sugar though!
