Moms seafood dinner

Foooooooood. I was looking through my desktop for pictures and found this folder of pictures from last month when I was home for Thanksgiving. This was the last dinner before coming back to New York. It was simple compared to the big turkey day feast, but this was still a very delicious dinner. It was a seafood theme with shrimp, whole fish, and some cuttlefish. The best part by far was the omelet with shrimp and chives. Salty and eggy and full of shrimp bits, the dish was one of those that disappeared a little too fast.

fried-fish

Pan fried fish is a common dish when my sister and I go home. When we first got to the U.S. when we were kids, it was strange to see that in the super market, most of the fish were filleted. At home, mom almost always cooked whole fish ever since we were young.

I know some people think it's kind of weird to pick at a whole fish but it's a really common thing in Asian cuisine. You can find grilled whole fish if you go to an Italian or Greek restaurant or something. But usually those dishes are for an individual. How often do you see people at a restaurant sharing a whole fish, unless it's an Asian restaurant? It's really something that's great to share with a group of people.

cuttlefish

The other part of dinner was stir fried cuttlefish with Chinese celery. First, I'm not exactly sure that thing is cuttlefish. haha. I think it's cuttlefish. It's also one of those things that's really only prominent in Asian cuisine. This probably has a difficult time catching on around the states because it's not something that innately distinctive taste. It's not bacon or anything like that. Texturally though, I think it's something that's interesting and worthy of a taste if you get a chance. Sometimes you'll see cuttlefish grilled too.

Anyway, a quick holiday shoutout for the Food Bank NYC. I read the other day there's a shortage of supplies at the local food banks. There's actually a thing going on their website now where if you donate $1 dollar, there's a matching donation of $2 dollars. So if you get a chance, head on to that site and see the work they're doing for the city to help curb hunger.
