Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is usually the biggest meal of the year for my family. Roasting turkey is not a huge tradition with mine, and we buy smoked turkeys from a store, then have a bunch of Chinese dishes with the Turkey. This is like the ebonics version of Thanksgiving, except it tastes better; you know, we take something that already works (like English or traditional Thanksgiving) and we make it better by kicking it up a notch.
Along with the smoked turkey, there is string beans, cauliflower, eggplants, chives and mushrooms, and vegetable buns. No mashed potatoes, no sweet potatoes, no cranberry sauce, and no gravy. I think anytime you buck tradition and try to spice it up a bit, you gotta make sure you do it even better or more enjoyable. For me, you really cannot beat this because you skip all the guilt associated with eating a lot since most of the side-dishes are actually healthy. This is important to me because usually I eat more than one huge turkey day feast for the week of Thanksgiving.
Last week I had a great Thanksgiving meal at my roommate's boyfriend's apartment. For that meal, I ate all the usual fixings like mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, gravy, and sweet potatoes. See, best of both worlds. Now if I could only trick people into feeding me like this every week. Hmmm... here are the rest of the pictures, since my words cannot do them justice.
